Happy March! Spring is right around the corner, and probably like some of you, I am definitely ready for warmer temperatures and sunshine. Also this week is National Read Across America Day, which occurs each year on March 2. I had the opportunity to celebrate with students and teachers earlier this week at Rossville Elementary School in Clinton County, where I read one of my favorite books, “Maybe.” I enjoyed visiting with the teachers and many students, plus an unexpected surprise was that Principal Chad Dennison and Assistant Principal Mike Feagans are like characters right out of a storybook (you can see in the video that they also dress up like characters!).
Check out the video below to see some highlights from the visit.

Our Indiana goal is to have 95% of third grade students demonstrating reading proficiency skills and passing IREAD by 2027. We know that students who pass IREAD by third grade are roughly 35% more likely to graduate high school. While we are all keenly aware that we have work to do, I appreciate schools in every region of our state that are leaning-in to science of reading and doing everything possible to ensure our students are reading proficiently. Also, several local school boards have passed resolutions affirming their shared commitment to Indiana’s 95% goal. Thank you to these school corporations (listed below), as well as the Indiana School Boards Association (ISBA) for encouraging local commitment to the reading goal.
- Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation
- Clarksville Community School Corporation
- Fort Wayne Community Schools
- Huntington County Community School Corporation
- Lafayette School Corporation
- Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township
- Pike County School Corporation
- Springs Valley School Corporation
- South Henry School Corporation
- South Putnam Community School Corporation
- South Vermillion Community School Corporation
- Tri-County School Corporation
- Tri-Creek School Corporation
We challenge ALL to elevate the importance of an all-hands-on-deck approach to making sure kids can read and to consider adopting this goal locally. Here is the template that others have used.
By continuing to work together, we can and must ensure every child is proficient in reading by the end of third grade. As always, thank you for all that you do for students!
