School Nutrition Programs

This weekly newsletter from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is dedicated to providing education, training, and technical assistance opportunities to school nutrition professionals, helping to ensure seamless operations for those participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA's) Child Nutrition Programs. If you are the food service contact for your school or facility, please be certain that everyone on your team has access to this important information.

Tip of the Week

After School Snack Program (ASSP) Reminders

  • Operators of the ASSP must conduct a program review at each site once within the first four weeks of operation.
  • The ASSP meal pattern must be followed for all snacks served.
  • Students must take both offered items.
  • Smart Snacks and ASSP are not the same. Not all items that are Smart Snack compliant will meet the ASSP meal pattern and not all items that can be served on ASSP are Smart Snack compliant.

Important Updates

Field Specialist Territory Changes

Field specialist territories change from year to year to balance workloads and administrative review assignments. Check CNPweb program year 2024 to view your assigned field specialist and contact information, which can be found just below the tabs on the Sponsor Summary Page.

School Year 2023-2024 Administrative Review (AR) notifications will go out soon. If notified, watch for timely email announcements from your assigned field specialist and respond as needed. Email correspondence will include due dates for AR resource management and pre-review questions.

USDA Foods

Pounds Diverted to Processors

Remember to utilize pounds diverted to processors. Pounds should be utilized at a rate of approximately 10% per month. To determine if your school diverted pounds to processors for school year 2023-2024, check your Surveys tab under the FDP link in CNPweb. Click the view link and this will take you to the survey. If you have clickable product codes at the left of the screen, your school has diverted pounds to processors. Pounds should be monitored and managed regularly via the commodity tracking websites, K12 Foodservice and ProcessorLink. For questions contact Cheryl Moore

Introducing Food Distribution Program (FDP) 2.0

What is it? FDP 2.0 is new program that will replace FDP software in CNPweb.

Who will use it? Schools, warehouses, and IDOE will use for the 2024-2025 school year.

When? The first phase of FDP 2.0 will be rolled out in December 2023 for school sponsors to complete the annual pre-order (forecast) survey in early 2024.

Why? The current FDP system will be retired for a more user friendly and updated system.

There will be more information forthcoming on access, logins, training and rollout phases in future newsletters.

We Want to Hear from You!

Although school is just beginning, we want to know which USDA Foods your school would like to see on the school year 2024-2025 annual pre-order (forecast) survey. The annual pre-order survey will open in early 2024. Please take a moment to complete the USDA Foods Wishlist Survey. If we receive enough interest, we may add these items to the survey. The deadline to provide your feedback is Friday, September 29.

Training and Webinar Opportunities

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Meal Pattern for Pre-Kindergarten (PK) Meals

  • PK students who are not co-mingled with kindergarten through fifth grade students must be served the CACFP meal pattern that corresponds to their age.

Join Fern Bachner, CACFP Specialist for a CACFP meal pattern refresher training Wednesday, August 30, at 2 p.m. ET, register here.

Reminders

Civil Rights “And Justice for All” Posters

USDA has not printed Civil Rights Posters in some time. Sponsors should hang the latest version they have available in the meal service area. If you do not have enough posters, consider copying one that you have in the original 11x17 size. If you do not have any posters, IDOE does not have any to give at this time. Currently, lack of civil rights signage will not result in a finding on the administrative review, but sponsors will be expected to hang posters when they become available again.
