School Nutrition Programs

This weekly newsletter from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is dedicated to providing education, training, and technical assistance opportunities to school nutrition professionals, helping to ensure seamless operations for those participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA's) Child Nutrition Programs. If you are the food service contact for your school or facility, please be certain that everyone on your team has access to this important information.

Tip of the Week

Program Year 2024 Application Reminders

  • Applications will only be reviewed once in Pending Approval status. Applications in Pending Submission status will not be reviewed for approval. Sponsors must click the green “Submit for State Approval” arrow to submit the application.
  • When completing the updated Permanent Agreement document, on the first page don’t forget to check the boxes for program participation. If you receive USDA foods, remember to select the Food Distribution Program (FDP).
  • The Permanent Agreement must be signed by the executive contact. The Food Service Director (FSD) cannot sign the document.
  • If operating with a Food Service Management Company, please ensure the school appointed FSD completes the ethics training for application approval purposes.

Important Updates

Open Office Hours

IDOE will host open office hours each Thursday afternoon for the next several weeks. The open sessions will allow for questions related to Direct Certification (DC), CNPweb program year (PY) 2024 application, and general free and reduced application questions. The open sessions are for questions and answers only and will not qualify for professional development training hours. Join us Thursday, August 17, at 2 p.m.

Civil Rights “And Justice for All” Posters

USDA has not printed Civil Rights Posters in some time. Sponsors should hang the latest version they have available in the meal service area. If you do not have enough posters, consider copying one that you have in the original 11x17 size. If you do not have any posters, IDOE does not have any to give at this time. Currently, lack of civil rights signage will not result in a finding on the administrative review, but sponsors will be expected to hang posters when they become available again.

Claims Due Dates

The claims due dates resource has been updated for the 2023-2024 school year. This is a great resource to print and save with your claims paperwork.

USDA Foods Beginning of Year Reminders

In case you missed the live training, here’s the recorded version: USDA Foods Beginning of Year Reminders.

We Want to Hear from You!

Although school is just beginning, we want to know which USDA Foods your school would like to see on the school year 2024-2025 annual pre-order (forecast) survey. The annual pre-order survey will open in early 2024. Please take a moment to complete the USDA Foods Wishlist Survey. If we receive enough interest, we may add these items to the survey. The deadline to provide feedback is Friday, September 29.

Introducing Food Distribution Program (FDP) 2.0

What is it? FDP 2.0 is new program that will replace FDP software in CNPweb.

Who will use it? Schools, warehouses, and IDOE will use for the 2024-2025 school year.

When? The first phase of FDP 2.0 will be rolled out in December 2023 for school sponsors to complete the annual pre-order (forecast) survey in early 2024.

Why? The current FDP system will be retired for a more user friendly and updated system.

There will be more information forthcoming on access, logins, training and rollout phases in future newsletters.

Disasters, Holds, and Recalls

Ever wonder what to do during a USDA Foods recall? IDOE has developed training materials to answer these questions.

ProcessorLink Training

Schools that allocated pounds to processors are required to monitor and manage those pounds for proper inventory management. IDOE is hosting a training for each commodity tracking website. Learn how to monitor and manage processor pounds, select distributors, run reports and review months on hand.
