Weekly School Nutrition Newsletter: Special Edition

11/08/2019

Dear Food Service Contact,

This email provides news for schools concerning the Child Nutrition Programs from the USDA and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). If you are the food service contact for your school or corporation, it is your responsibility to relay important information provided to you about the Child Nutrition Programs to other staff members.

Meal Service During Red for Ed Closures

  • We have received word that many schools will be closing on Tuesday, November 19 for the Red for Ed Rally.
  • The following information describes how a school might be able to provide and claim reimbursable meals:
    • If the school is planning to make this an eLearning Day, and this is still considered a school day for students, then they can offer a meal at school for enrolled students only. Schools would need to use their point of sale and follow the meal pattern. Additionally, meals must be eaten onsite during the normal scheduled times. Non-students would be charged the adult meal price.
    • If a school will be closed that day, but they are currently approved to provide At-Risk meals, schools could opt to change their service that day to a lunch and claim the meals under the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
    • If the school will be closed, but they are currently on the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) or Summer Seamless Option (SSO), meals cannot be served at a school site. If the school wanted to serve at a non-school site, these meals could be claimed under SFSP or SSO, but information would need to be updated in the CNPweb before the closure takes place.
