10/03/2019

Dear Food Service Contact,

This email provides news for schools concerning the Child Nutrition Programs from the USDA and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). If you are the food service contact for your school or corporation, it is your responsibility to relay important information provided to you about the Child Nutrition Programs to other staff members.

Direct Certification (DC) Data Updated for October

  • The DC system is now updated with current files from the Family and Social Services Administration and Department of Child Services.
  • All sponsors are encouraged to conduct a DC download of Standard, No County, and Extended Eligibility matches as soon as possible.
  • It is important that sponsors continue to conduct DC downloads throughout the month of October.
  • Click here to access the DC system.
  • Questions? Contact Allie Caito-Sipe at acaito@doe.in.gov.

E-Learning Days

  • Sponsors wanting to offer and claim meals to students on E-Learning days must remember that the meal service must meet all of the "normal" meal pattern requirements.
  • This includes:
    • Full servings of all components
    • Having it accessible to all students
    • Being served and consumed at school during the normal meal service time
    • Recording at the point of sale
  • Meals cannot be picked up, transported home, and then claimed for reimbursement, nor would this be an allowable expenditure from the food service account.
  • Questions? Contact your field specialist.

2019 National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Equipment Assistance Grant is NOW Accepting Applications

  • The 2019 NSLP Equipment Grant is now open!
  • This grant, funded through USDA, provides assistance to schools with helping purchase new or updated equipment for their kitchens.
  • Equipment should promote the goals of encouraging the consumption of healthy meals, meeting the approved meal pattern, safely storing and preparing food, and energy efficiency.
  • The maximum individual grant per site will be $50,000.
  • Per USDA mandates, preference will be given to:
    • Those with a higher free and reduced percentage
    • Schools and corporations that have not previously received equipment grants
  • Please note! Food Service Operating Balances will be reviewed for excess funds (defined as over three months average operating expenses) that could fund the new equipment.
  • Schools that have submitted grants in the past, but have not been awarded funds, should consider reapplying.
  • Applications will be accepted until Friday, November 1.
  • Award recipients will be announced by February 1, 2020.
