Weekly School Nutrition Newsletter

February 28, 2018

Dear Food Service Contact,

This email provides the most up-to-date news for schools about the Child Nutrition Programs from USDA and the State. If you are the food service contact for your school or corporation, it is your responsibility to relay important information provided to you about the Child Nutrition Programs to other staff members.

ISNA Spring Regionals

  • The Indiana School Nutrition Association (ISNA) is providing cashier’s training on reimbursable meals.
  • These two hour face-to-face regional trainings are designed to assist cashiers in understanding lunch and breakfast reimbursable meals under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
  • The Indiana Department of Education’s Field Specialists will be in attendance at each regional workshop.
  • Click here for registration, dates, and locations.

Summer Food Service Program

  • The State Superintendent issued a memo concerning the availability of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) which can be viewed here.
  • The SFSP is designed to fill the nutritional gap during extended school breaks and summer months when school is out of session.
  • For more information about SFSP eligibility and the application process, please contact Tina Skinner at (317) 232-0858.

Annual Pre-Order Survey

  • As a reminder, the fruits, vegetables and dairy portions of the annual pre-order survey for USDA Foods (formerly commodities) closes in approximately 2 weeks on Friday, March 9 at 4 p.m. Indianapolis time.
  • Please begin making your final product selections in the green puzzle piece here.
  • The livestock and poultry sections of the pre-order survey will remain open until Friday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
  • For now, please disregard the message which states: “you do not currently have a National School Lunch Program or Food Distribution Program information sheet for program year 2019 in pending approval or approved status."
  • You must complete the enrollment process before your information sheets can be approved, but you should still be able to complete the survey.
  • For resources and training materials regarding the pre-order survey and/or the Food Distribution Program, please visit our main web page at https://www.doe.in.gov/nutrition/food-distribution-program and click on the appropriate icon.

Contracted Warehouse

  • If your contracted warehouse is Dilgard Foods, McFarling Foods, or Wabash Food Service, there are still surplus dried cranberries available.
  • Please click here for the instructions on how to retrieve the dried cranberries from surplus and add them to your inventory.
