Dr. Jennifer McCormick

Dear Educators:

This week marked the beginning of the 2018 Indiana General Assembly "short session." We will be actively working with senators and representatives to advocate, advise, and assist in supporting our collective mission of working together for student success.

Please continue to communicate with the Department. We also encourage you to contact your local legislators. Please feel free to read some tips for reaching out to your area lawmakers. Your voice, your experiences, and your suggestions are critical as we move through this session.

Thank you for all you do to support our students!

Sincerely ,

Dr. Jennifer McCormick

State Superintendent of Public Instruction

Indiana Department of Education

Assessment

WIDA and ISTAR Part 1 Onsite Monitoring

The Office of Student Assessment will be conducting unannounced onsite monitoring visits during the WIDA and ISTAR Part 1 testing windows beginning the week of January 8 and January 15, respectively. Please ensure that school administrators and staff are aware that these onsite visits will be conducted. Please review this memo for more details.

ISTEP+ Grade 10 Winter Retest: Parent Portal Claim Codes Now Available

Corporation Test Coordinators may now download Parent Portal claim codes from PearsonAccessnext and distribute to parents before the Parent Portal opens on January 22. Schools may edit this parent letter template and include these instructions for accessing the Parent Portal. Claim codes provide access to FERPA-protected student data, so please handle with care.

Update: IDOE Spring Pretest Workshop – Inclement Weather Contingency Plan

In the event an onsite training location were to cancel school (e.g., power outage, inclement weather), the Department would reschedule the training as a WebEx session for the same time. Similarly, if a school scheduled to host a morning session were to experience a delayed start time, the onsite session would be reformatted as a WebEx session. Our office will notify registered participants via email (to include WebEx information) by 8:00 a.m. ET with any changes to the day’s scheduled training. We hope for optimal weather conditions and look forward to the opportunity to meet you during the onsite trainings; however, everyone’s safety is of upmost importance, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility should adjustments be required.

State Ombudsman Appointed for Department

The Indiana Department of Education has designated an ombudsman to monitor and enforce the requirements related to equitable services provided to non-public school children, teachers, and other educational personnel in non-public schools, as required in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).The State Ombudsman works in partnership with the Division of Title Grants and Support.  The Title Grants and Support team serves as the lead in providing technical assistance to public and non-public school officials regarding equitable services with federal funding. This ensures issues are resolved in a proactive manner, which allows for nearly all issues to be resolved before an official complaint is needed.  If, after technical assistance, issues still exist, complaints are then filed with the State Ombudsman, Brenda Martz, to mediate a positive resolution. Additional details and supporting documents can be found here.

Inclement Weather Waiver Policy

Given recent inclement weather, the Department would like to remind schools of the instructional day waiver policy (link to attachment). Please email School Accountability, with any questions regarding instructional waiver requests.
