Opening Avenues To A Brighter Future

Carlisle, Ind
.- Oakland City University now offers a Logistics course for offenders at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF).  Oakland City Education Coordinator Susan Russell said, "Logistics jobs are on the rise, meaning there will be more employment opportunities for those that complete the program."

Students begin the course by learning the Foundational Level (CLA) of Logistics.  CLA is comprised of modules on global supply chain, safe equipment operation, material handling, quality control, workplace communication, teamwork, and problem solving.  At the conclusion, students are required to pass an exam showing they have mastered the foundational skills necessary to move to the next phase.

The second portion of the course covers Mid-Level Technical Knowledge (CLT), and goes more in depth into the world of supply chain logistics.  The CLT modules cover product receiving, storage, order processing, packaging, and shipping, as well as inventory control, handling of hazardous materials, evaluation of transportation modes, customs, and tracking.  Once all the material has been covered, students are tested to ensure that they have gained the knowledge necessary to enter the Logistics field.

At the end of the courses, which total approximately 144 hours of classroom instruction, students are better prepared for a variety of logistics jobs such as Logistics Associate, Logistics Coordinator, Freight Forwarding Logistics Operator, etc.

Oakland City University Instructor Carol Roberts said, "Logistics is challenging.  Watching the students grasp the different aspects was rewarding.  They stayed focused and worked hard to obtain their certifications."

Student Willie Brown said, "Your future depends on the effort you put into it.  I would like to thank Oakland City and everyone involved for letting me have this opportunity to better myself."
