CPAFI Spring Scholarships Awarded

Carlisle, Ind.- Recently the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) awarded CPAFI scholarships to several recipients. The scholarships are offered to current IDOC employees and contractual staff, as well as their dependents. They are available for both full and part-time students and are awarded in the Spring and Fall of each calendar year. The scholarship awards are as follows:

  1. The Commissioner's Scholarship is the largest in the amount of $7,500 and is awarded to one recipient. 
  2. The following are awarded to one recipient each: The Public Safety Scholarship is $4,000 and the Rose Vaisvilas Scholarship is $3,000. 
  3. The following is awarded to multiple recipients: The Supplies Scholarships is $2,000 and the Part-Time Student Scholarships is $1,000.

There are several eligibility requirements for consideration, among which is a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Warden Vanihel said, "I am thankful that our staff has the Correctional Professionals Assistance Fund. It is a way to give back to the employees and their families during times of need."

Trey Carpenter, son of Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF) Correctional Investigator Steve Carpenter, and Linton-Stockton High School Teacher Chantel Carpenter was selected to receive a Supplies Scholarship. Trey is a freshman at Indiana State University majoring in Mechanical Engineering. When asked about receiving the scholarship Trey said, "I am honored to receive the CPAFI scholarship. The award greatly helps relieve the financial burden placed upon my family associated with the ever-increasing costs of getting a college education. This scholarship eases my mind, so I can focus on pursuing my degree." His father Steve Carpenter and WVCF Warden Frank Vanihel were present when Executive Director Dick Brown presented the award.
