Wabash Valley Correctional Facility Raises Funds for the March of Dimes
Carlisle, Ind. - Wabash Valley Correctional Facility's (WVCF) Carpenter Shop donated two rocking chairs and a table to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Donations began on May 28th when Clerical Assistant Shawna Vair opened up the donations with a minimum donation amount of $150.00. Over the next two weeks the donation amount continued to rise with Correctional Sergeant Steve Gardner donating the largest amount, $361.00. He made the donation in hopes of giving the chairs and table to his wife for her birthday. His wife, GTL Site Administrator Jennifer Gardner, was asked about the donation and her feelings about being a part of raising money for the March of Dimes. She stated, "The March of Dimes is a great organization. We are very happy to support them. This is the best birthday gift."
In 2010 Shawna Vair began her roll as WVCF's fund raising coordinator for the March of Dimes. Since that time WVCF has held several events to raise funds including taking donations for quilts, car washes, bake goods, t-shirts, beanie babies, and blue jean Friday's. The quilts were donated by the facility's Purposeful Living Unit Served (PLUS) Program. A unit designed to teach offenders about giving back to the community.
When Shawna was asked why she enjoyed leading the fund raising for the March of Dimes she stated that her interest in the March of Dimes was sparked after one of her children spent several weeks in Riley Hospital. She said the March of Dimes volunteers provided emotional support, as well as blankets, diapers, and toys. Shawna said, "It was something that really has stuck with me, so I try to do something for the March of Dimes campaign every year."
