CIF Recreation Coordinator Receives Courage Award

Pendleton, Ind. – The Correctional Industrial Facility’s Recreation Coordinator Mark Daulton was honored as the recent recipient of the Courage Award.

Mr. Daulton was nominated for this award for various reasons. Before the COVID Pandemic began he was already accomplishing more with less. Mark was ensuring that his department not only ran all of the sporting activities available to offenders but in addition to this was running programs which included the following: arts and crafts, painting classes, a music listening center as well as the facility musical band. This calm atmosphere that Mark fosters in recreation has likewise carried over to the offender population as well; which is essential when less custody staff are available to assist with daily duties. Mark and his staff always step up as they are usually responsible for the performance of the daily monitoring and security of the recreation lines in addition to performing their normal daily duties as well. Since the onset of the COVID Pandemic, Recreation Staff under Mr. Daulton’s direction have also taken additional steps to increase the sanitation in their department; this has been vitally important during this time as Recreation is one of the areas most frequented by the offender population. Mr. Daulton’s actions have helped to ensure a safe environment for both offenders and staff at the correctional facility.

When local video rental services were deemed non-essential business the result of the pandemic Mark reached out to fellow staff members and other facilities to ensure offenders still had movies to watch each week. Mark has truly went above and beyond expectations to ensure his department kept running smoothly during these challenging times.  His efforts provided offenders various opportunities to keep their minds and body engaged in a positive manner during this challenging time.

Warden Wendy Knight commented, “Mark is truly one of our staff members that just gets it; he understands the importance of what his department provides and its overall effect on the facility. He is truly deserving of this award. “
