Visit DNR at the Indiana State Fair

The DNR’s Natural Resources Building is the place to be during the Indiana State Fair (Aug. 2-18).

Located in the northwest area of the fairgrounds, DNR’s building not only is one of the few with air conditioning but also houses the best information, wild animals, and fun. Stop by the Fishin' Pond (open daily). Children ages 5-17 can fish for free every day of the fair.

See a snake or two, check out large aquariums filled with Indiana fish, and view live raptors at the amphitheater. While you are cooling off inside the DNR building, pick up the latest Recreation Guide, Fishing Guide, and Hunting & Trapping Guide, along with the guides for boating, off-road vehicles and much more.

$30 million available in second round of Next Level Trails grant program

Gov. Eric Holcomb and Indiana Department of Natural Resources director Cameron Clark have announced details of the second round of the Next Level Trails grant program, including three workshops in August for interested applicants.

Next Level Trails, which will dedicate $90 million of State funds over the life of the program, is the largest infusion of trail funding in state history. The grant program is divided into two components: a $70 million fund for regional projects and a $20 million fund for local projects. Each requires a minimum 20 percent project match, which can include monetary contributions, land value, and in-kind donations of materials and labor. Projects funded through this program must be open to the public.

The DNR Division of Water’s use of technology to communicate flood risks to Hoosiers has been recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Cooperating Technical Partners program (CTP).

The Division of Water received honorable mention “for outstanding achievement in developing CTP Communications and Outreach and Program Management activities.”

According to the CTP Newsletter, “Indiana DNR used funding and partnerships to merge the National Flood Hazard Layer to create the Indiana Best Available Floodplain Layer (BAFL).” The BAFL includes more than 18,000 stream miles of updated floodplain information that is useful for planning and better understanding potential flood risk.
