Greetings and happy fall! As we say goodbye to the warmth of summer, I find myself excited for the comforting embrace of autumn. This season, rich with its vibrant foliage and crisp air, offers many chances to get out into nature and reunite with old friends.

Amid the seasonal festivities, my focus remains steadfast on professional growth and development. In these past few months, I have been caught in a whirlwind of personal work, educational pursuits, and intricate nuclear power plant contracts. Engaging with new stakeholders has broadened my perspective and strengthened IDHS’ collaborative endeavors. Currently, I am working toward completing my hazmat certifications, paving the way for my transition to a hazmat technician role in the upcoming year.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security Radiation Programs Team continues tirelessly work to enhance programs, aiming to raise professional standards and bolster Indiana's safety and resilience.
Our goal? To elevate not only our professional standards but also the safety and resilience of the great state of Indiana.

As always stay safe and have a great fall season!

Japan Releases Fukushima Water Into Ocean
On Aug. 24, 2023, Japan started releasing more than one million metric tons of treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant. Japan is still dealing with the fallout from the damage to the plant from the 2011 tsunami. The water contains about 190 becquerels of tritium per liter, below the World Health Organization’s drinking water limit of 10,000 becquerels per liter. Japan stated it would remove most radioactive elements from the water except for tritium. China, however, disagreed and called the release negligent. China implemented a ban on Japanese seafood. This includes live, frozen, refrigerated and dried seafood. The ban also includes sea salt and seaweed.

J. Robert Oppenheimer’s Legacy Is Being Rewritten
The Oppenheimer movie directed by Christopher Nolan was released on July 21, 2023. The movie grossed over $934 million worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing film of 2023 and history's highest-grossing World War II-related film. The movie depicted the life of Julius Robert Oppenheimer and the events that led up to and including the atomic bomb.
In December of 1938, nuclear fission was discovered. Oppenheimer realized that this could be weaponized, and in 1942, amid World War II, U.S. Army General Leslie Groves recruited Oppenheimer to lead the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb. His story and the impact that he had on the history of nuclear detonation do not end there. To read more, follow the link below.
