IDHS Radiation Equipment Notice

IDHS is still developing a plan to have all IDHS radiation equipment calibrated and repaired in accordance with manufacturer standards.

Agencies in need of equipment calibration or repair should email hazmat@dhs.in.gov for more information.


Support Ending for RadResponder, ChemResponder Mobile Applications

The CBRNResponder mobile application replaced the separate RadResponder and ChemResponder mobile applications in August 2022. However, their separate websites remains. The CBRNResponder Team recommends users download the CBRNResponder application now if you have not begun your organization's transition.

Message From the Indiana State REP Coordinator

As we find ourselves fully immersed in the summer season, it is undeniable that the past few months have been eventful. Since assuming the role of REP Coordinator in February, I have dedicated myself to seamlessly transitioning into this position, eager to contribute to the success of our organization. My commitment has led me to actively participate in various training opportunities in Indiana and with stakeholders in Michigan and Illinois. Furthermore, I had the privilege of working at the renowned Indianapolis 500 event this past May. This unforgettable experience enabled me to collaborate with local and federal partners on a remarkable RND mission.

My goal is to continue to prioritize the well-being of our communities and working tirelessly to ensure their safety and resilience. With a strong commitment to professional growth, collaboration and a steadfast focus on excellence, I am confident that we will overcome any challenges that lie ahead.

Ukraine's Last Reactor

Ukraine has shut down its largest and last nuclear reactor as a safety precaution due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The decision was made by the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after the devastating flooding from the Kakhovka dam’s collapse threatened the plant’s cooling system. The reactor is in a state of “cold shutdown.” This means all control rods are inserted into the reactor core to stop the nuclear fission reaction and generation of heat and pressure. Russia currently occupies the plant, but Ukrainian workers are still working onsite. Five out of six reactors on site have been in a “cold shutdown” state since 2022.

Boston Dynamics Robot Dog

Scotland’s nuclear power plant Dounreay, on the north Caithness coast near Thurso, is being decommissioned and shut down. Boston Dynamics’ robotic “dogs” have been undergoing trials at the plant where they can be used to access demolition locations and clean up areas that are unsafe for humans.

These robotics dogs were also deployed at the Indianapolis 500 in May while teams conducted an RND screening mission at the Motor Speedway. Boston Dynamics brought out one of the dogs to help assist and train on the equipment. The dogs could walk the perimeter of the racetrack and climb into spaces more difficult for humans to access and up and down the grandstands to detect radiation. This program opens many doors to the future of nuclear technology.
