NEA announces grants to Indiana arts providers

NEA announces 11 grants to Indiana arts organizations and cultural program providers

(Indianapolis, Indiana) The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced to that it and 10 other Indiana-based arts organizations and cultural program providers are among the latest round of grants announced by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

As the only funder in the country to support arts activities in all 50 states and five U.S. jurisdictions, the NEA recently announced its second round of funding for Fiscal Year 2017 including 1,195 grants totaling $82.06 million. This round of grants awards include State and Regional Partnership Agreements; Art Works; and Our Town.

"The American people are recognized for their innovative spirit and these grants represent the vision, energy, and talent of America's artists and arts organizations," said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. "I am proud of the role the National Endowment for the Arts plays in helping advance the creative capacity of the United States."

NEA grants to Indiana total $1,217,400. This includes $767,400 awarded through a state partnership agreement with the Indiana Arts Commission for programs that benefit Hoosiers in all regions of the state.

Other Indiana grants include:

AHEPA Management Company              Fishers, IN                          $90,000
This Art Works Research grant will support a study examining the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional effects of music engagement on low-income, older adults.

American Folklore Society                    Bloomington, IN                 $30,000
This Art Works Folk & Traditional Arts grant will support the Consultancy and Professional Development Program. Administrators of nonprofit folk arts organizations, independent folklorists, and state and local government agencies engaged in traditional arts work will be able to apply for professional development training and short-term consultancies.

Arts Council of Indianapolis                 Indianapolis, IN                   $50,000
This Our Town Design grant will support artist, police, and community training for arts activities that address public safety challenges.

Arts Spaces, Inc.                                  Terre Haute, IN                     $75,000
This Our Town Design grant will help support Turn to the River project, a plan for reconnecting the City of Terre Haute to the Wabash River. Building off previous planning funded through Our Town, Art Spaces will work with the city to engage a design firm to provide design development and schematic designs for the area of downtown adjacent to the river.

City of Muncie                                     Muncie, IN                            $50,000
This Our Town Design grant will support an artist residence program at the MadJax Makers Hub. The city will partner with the Muncie Arts and Culture Council to provide visiting artists with a temporary residence, studio space, and fabrication equipment.

DePauw University                             Greencastle, IN                     $10,000
This Art Works Music grant will support a chamber music ensemble residency which may include programming for college and public school students and for the community.

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra     Indianapolis, IN                     $25,000
This Art Works Music grant will support the Lunch Break Series by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The series will comprise midday concerts lasting less than an hour with the goal of introducing new audiences to the symphonic art form.

Indiana University-Purdue University  Indianapolis, IN                    $90,000
This Art Works Research grant will support a series of studies examining higher education investments in physical and programmatic arts infrastructure in the United States. The quasi-experimental studies will consider the link between arts infrastructure investments in colleges and universities and various student-, school-, and community-level outcomes.

New Harmony Project                        Anderson, IN                          $20,000
This Art Works Theater & Musical Theater grant will support residencies for playwrights to develop new work with dramaturgical and production support.

Tippecanoe Arts Federation              Lafayette, IN                          $10,000
This Art Works Local Arts Agencies grant will support Art in Rural Places. Artist residencies in rural Indiana communities will provide arts instruction for local students and community members.
