Share your voice with the IAC

web cafe image

As part of its strategic planning process, the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) will host a series of Web Cafes early this month to seek input from constituents on the direction of the arts in our state. As artists, your opinions matter.

The Web Cafes are free, one-hour sessions tailored for community leaders, arts organizations and artists that will enable the IAC to gather feedback on overarching strategic planning themes.

The Web Cafe for artists will be May 11, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. (EDT) but you may take part in other sessions as well.

There are two ways to be part in the Web Cafes. Participants may join the conversation live from the host site or other live locations with others from your community, or take part in the comfort of their own home, office, or library on a computer with Internet connection.

The host site for all Web Cafe sessions will be the Harrison Center for the Arts, 1505 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis, Indiana.

Indiana Poet Laureate shares work at her old high school

shari wagner

Indiana Poet Laureate Shari Wagner (left) gazed out from a stage she last stood upon 40 years ago, as a senior at Norwell High School.

Projected on a screen behind her was a 1976 yearbook photo showing a teenage version of herself, then known as Shari Miller, working on the school newspaper.

"Time just fascinates me," she told the auditorium full of English students. "I feel like if I turned a corner, I could be sitting where you're sitting."

Back in those days, one of Wagner's favorite English teachers arranged for a poet from a state arts group to work with her class, giving her "lots of encouragement and confidence" to pursue what became her life's work.

Getting Beyond Stereotypes: Better Disability Journalism

artswork logo

There are 56 million Americans who identify as disabled. Tens of millions more are connected to disability as direct caregivers or family members. Yet journalism about disability is too often stuck in decades-old models that imagine disability only as tragedy, a personal medical problem or something to be overcome.

Thankfully, the historical divide between newsrooms and disability activist communities is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Getting Beyond Stereotypes: Better Disability Journalism is a free webinar that will offer better ways to tell stories about disability and identity, reveal key resources for reporting on these stories and see the disability angle hidden within almost ever beat.

The webinar is May 11, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT). For more information and registration, click here.
