Hi County/Local Agencies,
In months past, I've had questions about the retention of burial transmittals and the location of birth records.
Burial transmittals are non-scheduled records as of right now. Non-scheduled records can be destroyed or transferred using the State Form 30505 or also called the "PR-1".
Birth records are accessible at your county health department or by contacting ISDH (Indiana State Department of Health).
The Indiana Department of Health Division of Vital Records is responsible for maintaining and issuing certified copies of vital records, including birth, death, and fetal death certificates for events that occurred in Indiana. The office of Vital Records officially began recording births in 1907, and death recordings began in 1900.
For county and local health departments, birth records are also not yet scheduled. However, those should be retained permanently, either in hard copy or microfilm format.
In the future, IARA plans to create a retention schedule for the county and local health departments. It is our goal to begin that process in 2022 so please stayed tuned AND if you are a county or local health official who would like to help create the schedule, please let me know!
Mark your calendar! The Monthly RM Chat for County/Local Agencies for September will take place on:
