Hello County/Local Agencies,
There is a great deal of confusion when offices at the county level have questions about court records so I wanted to clarify IARA's involvement in court records, Indiana government's retention schedules, and who to contact for what records.
Indiana government records are covered by five types of Retention Schedules. The first four are created and updated by the Records Management staff of the Indiana Archives and Records Administration (working with the affected agencies and offices), while the fifth type is managed by the Indiana Judiciary.
As county/local agencies, you potentially fall under 3 of those retention schedules:
County/Local General (IARA)
County/Local Office-Specific (IARA)
Judicial (Indiana Judiciary)
Questions about judicial records should be directed to the Indiana Judiciary. Court financial records may bring up questions on which agencies to contact. Financial records, even from courts, do fall under the jurisdiction of the Indiana Archives and Records Administration and are found on the County/Local General retention schedule.
Your contact at IARA is me, Amy Christiansen Janicki, and your contact at the Indiana Judiciary about court case records is Tom Jones, tom.jones@courts.in.gov. Tom and I work closely together and often refer questions to each other.
Welcome to August!
