IARA County/Local Records Management - Indiana Public Catalog

Hi County/Local Agencies,

Many county officers wonder what the Indiana State Archives holds from their county. Fortunately, the Indiana State Archives has a public catalog, where you can search by container, record series, or entity (agency or local office). There are a few ways to search:  

On the Research Indiana Catalog, choose the blue folder icon titled “Search for Series” and then “Show Advanced Search Options.” Here, you could type the name of a county in the “Geographic Location” field like this: 

Click Search to see the results, which will be a list of every record type that has our example, “Allen County,” listed as the location. Keep in mind that these results may include records from other agencies, such as the Department of Natural Resources or the Department of Transportation. You can use the filters on the left side of the page to narrow your results to county government, or even more specifically to one of the county offices.  

If you’d like to limit your results to records created by a specific office of Allen County, you could also use the “Creating Entity” search field instead of the “Geographic Location.” Click the magnifying glass to see all of the options, and then choose the one you’d like. 

Each result is a record series that may contain several boxes or records. Click on the result, and then click the drop-down arrow under “Containers” to see everything at the Archives from that particular record series. You can then click on each container for even more information. (Please note that not all master microfilm is included in the online catalog).
