Illinois WIC Transitioning Infant Formula to Similac Brand
On February 1, 2026, Illinois WIC will transition from Enfamil (Mead Johnson) infant formula to Similac (Abbott).
Federal regulations require state WIC agencies to solicit bids for infant formula. This allows for a wise use of resources, ensuring agencies can serve as many families as possible.
Meeting the Needs of WIC Families
-
Illinois WIC promotes and supports breastfeeding as the normative standard for infant feeding and nutrition. Infant formula is available for clients who need it.
-
Similac and Enfamil products are nutritionally comparable.
-
Medically prescribed formula products provided through Illinois WIC will not change.
-
All Illinois WIC families will be transitioned to Similac (Abbott) formula by May 1, 2026. The formula will be provided to families at their normally scheduled WIC appointment from February to April 2026.
