The SWALCO Scoop

August 2024

August 7, 2024

Hello SWALCO fans!

Welcome to the second edition of The SWALCO Scoop, our monthly electronic newsletter. This month, we're bringing you important updates to Lake County's recycling guidelines. We'll also share tips on what to do with old clothes as back-to-school season approaches and ways to dispose of summer household chemicals like pool chemicals.

Recycling Guidelines Updates - Paper Cups!

SWALCO Cups Recycling

It's official! Paper cups can be recycled in your curbside bin.

Remember:

  1. Empty the liquids
  2. Throw the lid, straws, and stirrers in the trash
  3. Remove the cardboard sleeve from the cup and place it separately in your curbside recycling bin

When you recycle your empty paper cup, paper mills are able to turn this material into new products such as tissues, boxes, and even new cups!

For more information, visit the Recycling Guidelines page on the SWALCO website.

Make Room for the New, Responsibly!

clothing textile bin

As the new school year approaches, it's the perfect time to clear out those closets and make room for fresh outfits. Today, nearly 85% of all clothing and textiles end up in landfills, making it the fastest growing waste in the U.S. waste stream. In 2014, SWALCO began a year-round Clothing and Textile Collection Program. We currently operate 75 bins at nearly 60 sites throughout Lake County. New and gently-used donations are tax-deductible and are reused. Worn, torn, and stained items are recycled/upcycled.

Let's make this back-to-school season greener together!

Safe Summer Cleanup

Proper Disposal of Pool Chemicals

Pool Chemicals

Summer is heating up! It's important to handle your pool chemicals with care. Improper storage and disposal can pose health risks and harm the environment. SWALCO offers Household Chemical Waste collection events throughout the year to help you dispose of these materials safely. Schedule an appointment and bring your unused, used, or expired pool chemicals to our drop-off site, and we'll take care of the rest! Check out our August 2024 Events Calendar below for event dates and locations. Let's work together to keep our community safe and clean this summer!
