 Measles Update

Education
|
Improve Community Vaccination Rates
Schools, early childhood education providers, and healthcare providers should work to ensure students are current with MMR vaccine. Please identify patients in your practice who are NOT current and preemptively call to schedule them.
All U.S. residents older than age 6 months without evidence of immunity who are planning to travel internationally should receive MMR vaccine prior to departure.
Preparedness
Emergency department and hospital administrators should consider preparation exercises for suspect measles cases to ensure preparedness. Don’t forget to immediately notify the Lake County Health Department’s Communicable Diseases Program by calling 847-377-8130, option #1.
Healthcare provider practices, urgent centers, and hospitals should be aware of healthcare personnel who are non-immune to measles. If exposed, non-immune staff should receive post exposure prophylaxis in the form of a measles vaccine within 72 hours of the first day of exposure and if they cannot get the measles vaccine then, then they should receive the immunoglobulin within 6 days of exposure. Healthcare providers without evidence of immunity should be excluded from work from day 5 after the first exposure until day 21 following their last exposure.
