Lake County Health Department Coronavirus (COVID-19) Newsletter

April 11, 2020

Dear Lake County Residents,

With many religious holidays occurring this month, the stay-at-home order can feel even more burdensome, as this is a time that we traditionally gather with families, friends, and our larger communities. Especially this week, we encourage you to find comfort in the greater meaning behind our collective sacrifice. By staying home, we are protecting those we love, our friends, our colleagues, our neighbors, and our communities.

Religious Holidays

Thank you, Karen and Ruby in Waukegan, pictured below, for sharing with us the reasons that they are staying home! You can print out the form they used at this link and share it on social media with the hashtag #StayHomeLakeCounty.

Please remember that if you are feeling ill, even if your symptoms are mild, please do NOT go out for errands like grocery shopping or to the pharmacy. Call a family member, friend, or neighbor and ask if they can shop for you, or take advantage of the many stores that are offering delivery service. Thank you for doing your part to help protect us all.

Spring Yard Cleaning—Don't Burn!

So many of us are using this time to catch up on yard work. There are a lot of leaves on the ground this spring because it was too cold to pick them up by the time they fell last fall. While leaf burning is permitted in many areas of Lake County, it poses serious health consequences during the COVID-19 pandemic. People with underlying respiratory issues are more likely to develop serious complications if they contract COVID-19, and smoke exposure can make it worse. Even for people who do not have underlying respiratory issues, smoke exposure can cause worsening symptoms of COVID-19. Do your part to protect your family and your neighbors:
Please bag, mulch or compost this spring—don't burn!
