Dear Neighbors,

Most Lake County residents spend far too much time on our roads and highways, mostly because they haven't been updated for modern traffic patterns. When we sit in traffic, we not only waste time, we dump more carbon into the atmosphere and are away from our families and the things we love.

That's why the unanimous passage of our resolution to urge Springfield to provide $1.5 billion for transportation projects at the county board meeting last week was a big step in the right direction. The resolution, which originated in the legislative committee, which I chair, calls for "sustainable funding" for the State Highway Consensus Plan for Lake County

The plan includes projects that have been on the books since 2006. For example, we urgently need to improve Routes 120 and 83, the spine of Lake County. We've been lobbying for our consensus plan since the beginning of the year -- and over the past decade -- and will continue to push Springfield to get this work done.

We're awaiting a promised state "capital" bill from the General Assembly that would provide the funding. We're told by our state delegation that legislation is forthcoming.

Keep in mind that Lake County has done more than its fair share: We've ponied up $150 million of local money -- to fix many state highways. Now it's Springfield's turn to step up to the plate big time. Let your state legislators and Governor Pritzker know how you feel. We can get this done with your support. Learn more about the plan in the video featured in this newsletter.

Traffic Congestion Relief and Paperless Court System

April 19 board wrap-up

The County Board had a busy month acting on various measures that will directly impact transportation and sustainability in Lake County. The board reaffirmed the countywide State Highway Consensus Plan that identifies transportation projects to relieve traffic congestion and approved a contract to ensure all County-owned street lights use LED’s. Additionally, the board appropriated funds for a new court case management system that will make more court documents available electronically, cutting the need for paper. Scott’s Law – A Traffic Law You MUST Know

Scott's Law

In 2019, two Illinois State Troopers have been killed in crashes directly related to Scott’s Law violations. Scott’s Law requires all motorists to yield a full lane or, when unable to yield a full lane, reduce their speed upon approaching a vehicle with flashing lights. For everyone’s safety, if you see flashing lights, move over and slow down! Watch this video to learn more

Drop It and Drive! Stay Alive!

buckle up phone down

Drop the phone, slow down, and drive safely! Through April, which is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, motorists will see increased patrols and enforcement zones. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving blind at 55 miles per hour for the length of an entire football field.  Get tips on how to avoid distracted driving.

New Programs Lead to Increased Recycling at the Jail

Food scrap program

Last fall, the Lake County Adult Corrections Facility opened its newly remodeled kitchen and implemented a food scrap program that has led to much less garbage! Approximately 125 tons of material will be composted and recycled this year instead of thrown away. That is equal to 243.75 metric tons/month of avoided CO2 emission, or taking 631 cars off the road. The program is essentially paying for itself, as the cost previously needed to transport waste to the landfill is now being used to compost and recycle food scraps. Watch this video to learn more.
