A Hint of History

Lewis Dorsett

Lewis C. Dorsett served as Lake County's fourth county clerk. He was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin with his parents in 1843. His family then moved to Waukegan, and a young Mr. Dorsett attended the local public schools.

In 1855, he worked on and off as an assistant postmaster in the Waukegan post office for twenty-three years and was considered to be very popular with the customers.

Mr. Dorsett married Miss Harriet A. Sherman in May of 1880. They both were members of the Christ Episcopal Church of Waukegan. Their family consisted of two daughters, Belle and Gertie, and a son, Sherman Lewis, all born in Waukegan.

He left the employment of the post office in 1877 after being elected to the office of County Clerk of Lake County where he served until his death in 1893.
