On July 12, 2017 Lake County experienced record flooding, resulting in flood damages to many homes. In response to this, Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) is hosting a Floodproofing Expo and Workshop for homeowners and property owners. This will be an opportunity for residents to learn about various products, services, and solutions to minimize flood damages to their homes and properties.
The event will be held at the Libertyville Sports Complex on Thursday, Oct. 19, in an open-house format from 3 – 8 p.m. There will be presentations every hour on various subjects, from drainage evaluation, to flood insurance, to structural protection measures. Vendor booths and information tables will also be available. In addition to the Lake County Stormwater Management
Commission (SMC), several other local and state departments and agencies will
be participating. Lake County Public Works will demonstrate various sandbag
filling and stacking methods, and Lake County’s Planning, Building and
Development Department and Health Department will have resources to share. The
Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will also be in attendance to
provide information and answer questions.
"During the recent flood, about 3,500 homes in Lake County were damaged. Many homeowners are not aware that they can implement protective measures to reduce, and potentially eliminate, basement flooding and sewer backup," Kurt Woolford, Chief Engineer at SMC, said. "That's why we're looking forward to this workshop. We want to create a space where residents can learn about different options for minimizing losses and decreasing flood damage in the future."
The Libertyville Sports Complex is located at 1950 North US Highway 45, Libertyville, IL. (At the corner of Peterson Road and US Highway 45.)
