Hello Neighbors

Free elections are an expression of what's special about USA freedoms and our nation's roots.

It's time for candidates to begin gathering petition signatures for the March 20, 2018 primary election which leads to the November  6, 2018 general election.  Please be thoughtful with candidates and volunteers who are working at the grassroots level.

You can be most directly involved in elections by voting. Watch for the dates and methods for early voting and vote by mail (absentee). In addition to being a candidate or campaign volunteer, you may enjoy serving as an election judge.

As I'm writing this, the people in the Houston Area are beginning the long road to recovery while residents of Florida and the southern coastal states are bracing for Irma and possibly more fierce weather.  I just sent the disaster-preparedness article below to friends in Irma's path.

Because Teresa and I have years of service as volunteers, we have been asked about how to help, what to do.  The simple answer is - send money, not things.  The recovery leaders know what, where, when and how much is needed.

Teresa also has years as a professioal leader of US and international not-for-profits.  She and other legitimate sources tell us to avoid the many unfortunate scams by referring to the most trusted resource, Charity Navigator.  You can choose from scores of organizations with missions that align with your values and interests.

Please share this newsletter with friends and invite them to subscribe so they can stay current with Lake County and village information. Contact me via phone or email with your concerns, questions and suggestions.

July 2017 Flood Update

flood

On Sept. 1, Governor Bruce Rauner sent a request to the president of the United States asking that he approve federal assistance to help people in the northern Illinois region, including Lake County, recover from record flooding and severe storms in July.

Recently, joint assessment teams from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reviewed damage in the four counties. If Gov. Rauner's request for Individual Assistance (IA) is approved, people in the approved counties would be eligible to apply for grants and low-interest SBA loans. Affected businesses also would be able to apply for low-interest SBA loans. Find out more.

Health Risks Still Present for Residents Impacted by Flooding
With flooding cleanup and recovery efforts well underway, residents with private water wells and septic systems are reminded to take precautions to avoid health risks as floodwaters often contain bacteria or other contaminants that can cause illness. Floodwater may have contaminated water wells and caused septic systems to fail. The Lake County Health Department is continuing to offer a free water sample analysis until Thursday, Sept. 7. Residents May Be Eligible for Building Permit Fee Waiver

Nippersink Forest Preserve

Connecting Trails: Nippersink Forest Preserve
Previously a seasonal retreat for camping and recreational vehicles, this preserve is now a year-round haven for people and wildlife. Visitors enjoy trails, picnicking, birdwatching, and nature observation. Century-old oak trees that rise above two scenic lakes, woodlands, wetlands and marshes offer plentiful habitat for wildlife. Extensive shoreline restoration efforts and improved fish habitats make Nippersink a great place to fish. Anglers can fish from shore or from two wheelchair accessible fishing piers.

The Lake County Division of Transportation is constructing a new multi-use path along Cedar Lake Road that will connect existing trails at Nippersink to the new path. This trail connection is part of LCDOT's project to reconstruct Cedar Lake Road from Route 120 to Nippersink Road. Completion of the entire project is expected by the end of 2018. Local Control on Election of Board Chairman Preserved

Calling it an “inappropriate interference” to county government, Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 669 late Friday afternoon. The legislation sets a separate process for electing the County Board Chairman in Lake County and requires a local referendum be held in 2018 to seek approval on electing the board chairman directly by voters countywide versus by the members of the county board.
