Leaders Take a Stand for a Welcoming and Inclusive Community

Summit of Leaders

More than 200 Lake County leaders recently came together to take a stand for inclusion and unity and pledged to make Lake County an inclusive and welcoming community. Following increased reports of divisiveness, intolerance, and disrespectful actions across the country, Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim along with myself and the The Partnership for a Safer Lake County hosted the Summit of Leaders to engage local leaders to have a meaningful discussion around inclusion and building respect in all aspects of community life. Lake County Ordinance Revision Open House, March 15

Several Lake County departments are reviewing and updating their ordinances, and we want to hear from you! Please join us for an open house to review the changes, provide feedback, and ask questions. We are bringing departments, including the Lake County Division of Transportation, Health Department, Planning, Building and Development, Public Works and Stormwater Management Commission together in one spot, so our customers and stakeholders can get all of the information they need in one stop. Sheriff’s Office to Hold Job Fair

Learn more about job openings within the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as they host a job fair from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 11 at the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan. Learn more  

Illinois Sheriff’s Association offers $500 scholarship 
The Illinois Sheriff's Association will be awarding a $500 college scholarship to a local student seeking to pursue higher education during the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarship is to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents and be enrolled full time during the 2017-18 school year.

Applications are available at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office website. Complete the application, including a 350-word essay, and return all documentation to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 25 S Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Waukegan by March 15.


Essay Contest Planned for National Crime Victims' Rights Week

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office is hosting an essay contest in conjunction with its National Crime Victims' Rights Week program. Any student who has been a victim of a crime is invited to nominate someone who served as a "hero," helping them regain strength, resilience, and/or justice during this time. The selected essay will be featured during the Victims' Rights Week program on April 4. The deadline to submit the essay is March 22. Learn more about the essay contest

Severe weather can happen anytime, such as hazardous conditions produced by thunderstorms, including damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail, and flooding, and winter storms associated with sleet, snow and strong winds. As Illinois observes Severe Weather Preparedness Week, make sure you are prepared before severe weather occurs. Go to Ready.gov to learn your risks as well as how to create an emergency plan.

Volunteer with the Forest Preserves
Volunteers help the Forest Preserve District from public safety and habitat restoration to historic preservation and nature education. In 2016, volunteers contributed more than 36,000 hours. The value of this work exceeds $1 million and is the equivalent of nearly 20 full time staff members. At a recent volunteer recognition brunch, we introduced the Gilman Award to recognize an individual who proves dedication through service. Congratulations to the 2017 Gilman Award winner, Paul Klonowski! Paul, who began volunteering 15 years ago, helps with our paddle sports program and grew the Water TrailKeepers program from scratch. Learn how you can get involved.

The Hawthorn Woods Parks and Recreation's summer 2017 brochure was recently delivered to all mailboxes in Hawthorn Woods. The brochure contains information on summer camps, swim lessons, the aquatic center, and summer events such as Concerts in the Park, Movies in the Park, Car Show Cruise Nights, and Fourth of July festivities. Registration is now open for all summer programs.
