Signal Study Shows Reduction in Vehicle Delays, Fuel Usage

Signal coordination study 2016

In 2016, the Lake County Division of Transportation studied four travel corridors to look at signal timings during peak travel times in the morning, mid-day, and in the evening. One of the corridors in the study was Butterfield Road from Allanson Road to IL Route 137. The results of the study show LCDOT reduced delay by 265.9 hours and saved 115 gallons of fuel per day, for an annual benefit of $1,676,607.

The overall results of the study show that technology enhancements, adjusting the signal timings, and coordinating the signals through the Lake County PASSAGE system led to a reduction in vehicle delays (477.8 hours) and a reduction in fuel consumption (318.2 gallons) per day. Not only does this save money, approximately $3.1 million a year, but this also means less time stuck in the car and more time doing the things you want to do. An added benefit of the study was a reduction in CO2 emissions by 566 metric tons per year.  Learn more about the study.

Radon Gas Testing Kits Available through the Health Department

radon test kits play button

In observance of January as National Radon Action Month by the Environmental Protection Agency, you are encouraged to check radon levels in your home or apartment during the winter months.

Radon is an odorless and colorless gas that naturally occurs in rock and soil. It can seep into homes from the soil through cracks in the basement floors and foundations, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations.

Short-term test kits are available through the Lake County Health Department for $10. Watch this video to learn more about radon and the test kits.
