Lake County Connects with Residents at Telephone Town Hall

Telephone Town Hall

More than 700 residents recently participated in Lake County’s first Telephone Town Hall meeting. Participants learned about important issues that Lake County government has a role in from property taxes, to jobs to traffic congestion. Some even shared their questions and comments live on the air. Listen to the discussion.

Christmas Tree Recycling
Bring your Christmas tree to select Lake County Forest Preserve locations. Donated trees are chipped and used for trails and landscaping at forest preserves throughout Lake County. Find out more

Textile Recycling Program
Help reduce landfill space by bringing old or unwanted textiles of all kinds to one of these drop off locations to be repurposed or recycled.

Household Chemical Waste Drop Off Events
Keep our environment clean by disposing of chemicals safely. Schedule a household chemical waste recycling appointment for Jan. 14 or 23 at the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County facility, 1311 N. Estes St., Gurnee. Acceptable Items


State to Launch New License Plate Replacement Program

The Illinois Secretary of State's office is launching a new license plate replacement program beginning in January to replace the oldest license plates with newly designed plates. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail if they qualify for the new license plates. If you are not up for replacement, you may request a new license plate in January at www.cyberdriveillinois.com for a $29 fee. In addition, vehicle owners with license plates manufactured after 2001 that are showing signs of wear and are difficult to read may visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com to apply for a newly designed plate at no charge.

Cold weather brings winter fun in your forest preserves. Enjoy a solar-lit evening hike, sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating or ice fishing this season. Before heading out, check for status updates online, or call the 24-hour winter sports hotline at 847-968-3235. Learn more.

Winter Habitat Restoration Projects
This winter, the Forest Preserve's well-trained crews will remove invasive woody species, primarily buckthorn, autumn olive, sandbar willow and honeysuckle from forest preserves across the county. A total of 27 restoration projects are scheduled this season, including 447 acres of woody clearing, 70 acres of forestry mowing, and 170 acres of small invasive tree and shrub removal. Board President Maine, Vice President Pedersen Retain Posts
The Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners have elected their new leaders, choosing to retain Ann Maine of Lincolnshire (District 21) for a fourth consecutive term as president of the Lake County Forest Preserves. The Board also re-elected Linda Pedersen of Antioch (District 1) to serve as vice president. Both will serve two-year terms, which will end December 2018. Learn more

Gurnee Conducts Special Traffic Enforcement Efforts
The Gurnee Police Department is conducting special traffic enforcement efforts throughout the village through Jan. 2, 2017. Funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these additional hours of enforcement actions are being focused to remove drunk and drugged drivers from roadways, increase safety belt compliance, child safety seat use, and to curb speeding motorists. Study for Finals at Warren-Newport Public Library's Finals Cafe
Final exams are coming at high schools in Gurnee, and the Warren-Newport Public Library wants to help. From 3 to 7 p.m. today and noon to 4 p.m Tuesday, Dec. 20, the library is hosting a Finals Cafe in Meeting Rooms A & B. Students can spread out and cram for finals or get together to work study groups. Complimentary snacks and drinks will be available. No registration is required.
