Hello Neighbors
Lake County government addresses the need for effective transportation through our Division of Transportation (LCDOT). The term "Transportation" includes a number of modes of travel: roads, trains (Metra), buses and Paratransit (Pace), bike/hike paths and more.
Intermodal connections rely on collaboration. For example, residents who choose to bike to train or bus connecting points can bring their bikes on the bus or train if they choose to do so.
LCDOT staff members do their best to coordinate with
transportation staff at Metra, Pace, municipalities, townships, the Lake County Forest Preserves District(LCFPD), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Tollway Authority and the Federal Government. These and other organizations (e.g. developers and home owner associations [HOAs]) build and maintain roads and streets in Lake County.
LCDOT bike/hike paths often connect with paths in forest preserves, municipalities, park districts, housing developments, etc. to provide seamless, enjoyable non-motorized travel in and through our county on foot, bike - or in some cases - horseback.
I am pleased to provide you with transportation news and resources along with information from other Lake County Departments and LCFPD. You can find added resources by using the links below to villages, libraries, parks and more. I hope you find this to be informative and helpful..

Road building in Illinois is a complex and lengthy process. The Rt 60/83 project, estimated now to cost $90 million, would
extend from Mundelein Crossings (Ivanhoe/Target) to Diamond Lake
Road. It will include a grade separation, likely a bridge over the railroad tracks.
This informative article about Barrington's transportation initiative is one example of the process and timeline. It started in January 2010 with meetings and workshops to gather community input.
A similar process for Rt 60/83 ended in October 2014. The report is due by Dec. 31, 2016. Only then can the state department of transportation, IDOT, consider moving to the other phases, as outlined in the Barrington example.

Governor
Bruce Rauner recently signed legislation that gives Lake County (along with
McHenry County) the authority to consolidate and dissolve units of local
government. This legislative change helps Lake County build on its
consolidation efforts to improve efficiency of government services and
alleviate tax burdens on residents.
Chairman
Aaron Lawlor said, “We recognize that in these tough times, the same old way of
conducting our business just doesn’t cut it. That’s why we are leading efforts
to save taxpayer money by sharing services, including contracting with
municipalities for plan review and inspection service and providing police
services at cost for some municipalities. We are also exploring the feasibility
of consolidating 911 emergency dispatch centers in the region, which presents
tremendous opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and provide cost
savings.”
The new law
is an expansion of a 2013 law that only applied to DuPage County. This move is
a step toward reducing the more than 7,000 units of government in Illinois,
which is more than any state in the nation.
