We continue to work on a number of initiatives to best serve Lake County residents.  There are a number of road, health and outdoor programs available to you.  Be sure to read below and learn more.

There are a number of fun summer events in all our communities.  You can learn more by viewing their web sites.  I've provided links to them below.

A Way Out

Lake County Opioid Initiative Launches Countywide Substance Abuse Treatment Access Program 
Individuals who struggle with substance abuse will be able to get directed quickly to treatment through a pilot program launched by the Lake County Opioid Initiative called “A Way Out. The program will be offered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at participating police departments across Lake County. Individuals, who possess narcotics or paraphernalia, enter a participating police department and tell an officer they are requesting help will avoid criminal charges as long as the participant seeks assistance. Health department offers tests at free health fair 
The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center, the Lake County Stands Against Stigma Coalition and community partners will hold a free health fair June 27 in observance of National HIV Testing Day. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the front lawn of the Belvidere Medical Building, 2400 Belvidere Rd., Waukegan (near the corner of Belvidere Road and Keller Avenue). In addition to free health and community resources, free HIV tests (for people 13 and older) and hepatitis C tests (for people 18 and older) will be available. More information         

Protect Yourself Against Ruse Burglaries

Northern Illinois tends to see an increase in ruse burglaries during the summer months, and ruse burglars have already been striking in Lake County and surrounding areas. A ruse burglary is a distraction technique used to lure homeowners outside of their home. After the homeowner is outside the home and distracted by one individual, another individual(s) enters the home typically targeting items to steal such as cash, jewelry, and other items of value. View these reminders to help protect you against ruse burglaries.

Independence Grove beach

Swim and play at Independence Grove beach
Grab your swimsuit, towel and sunscreen, and head to the beach at Independence Grove in Libertyville. The beach offers 400 feet of sand along a 115-acre lake. The beach gets even better on Family Fun Fridays with games, contests and prizes around a different theme each week. The beach is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. unless otherwise posted. Learn more. 

Walk on the wildflower side
Uncover the secrets of wildflowers, and learn about the folklore and healing powers they hold. Take a leisurely guided walk in a different preserve each month. Along the way, you'll learn to identify some of the lovely wildflowers found in Lake County. Learn more.

Enjoy nature?  Want to learn something new?  Visit our Nature Blogthis summer and fall Alison and Jen will be exploring the Des Plaines Trail and Greenway, in anticipation of the completion of the trail.  And if you enjoy history, be sure to read the History Blog by Diana Dreske.  You'll be surprised at what you learn.

Did you know that the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is more than just roads? LCDOT has about 60 miles of bike paths and bike lanes as part of the Lake County highway system and continues to consider non-motorized travel a high priority. Watch this video to learn more.

Learn how the County Is Collaborating with Residents, Businesses and Agencies for a Sustainable Future
County, community and business leaders recently came together to discuss what the County has done and what the County plans to do to address environmental issues at the Lake County Green Conference. The conference recognizes Lake County’s sustainability achievements in all sectors including business, residential and institutional. Learn more

SWALCO offers a clothing and textile collection program at the Lake Bluff public works facility and recycling center, 640 Rockland Road, Lake Bluff. There are now 20 locations across Lake County for residents.

The Lake County Board and our economic development partners are continuously collaborating on initiatives to improve our economic environment, from a healthcare consortium to address workforce shortages and increase apprenticeship opportunities, to a proposed innovation and research park at Rosalind Franklin University. Veterans are invited to attend “Federal Application Friday” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 24 at the Job Center of Lake County, 1 N. Genessee St., Waukegan. This workshop will explain how to obtain federal employment from start to finish including an opportunity to apply for jobs with USA Jobs. Reservations are required. Learn more about the workshop.

Apply today to become an election judge
Election judges work as a team to administer the proper and lawful conduct of all elections by processing voters in the voting sites. Each judge must be a Lake County registered voter and fluently read and write English.

Required training is free and is offered at convenient locations and times. Election judge pay is determined by level of training completed and assignment.

Vernon Township's eighth annual Community Garage Sale will take place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at the Prairie View Metra Station 2701 Main St., Buffalo Grove. Over 60 vendors will participate.
