Bridge Street bridge, construction nears completion
Thank you for your patience with the nearly year-long
reconstruction of the Bridge Street bridge at the Ecology Center. The expanded bridge is now open, with new
concrete beams and decks, new approach slabs, wider and raised pedestrian
sidewalks, better connections to the paths in Twiggs Park, and bike lanes in
both directions. This project was first
proposed in 2004 and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, along with the City of Evanston. Remaining work
on this project includes new street lights and upgrades to the traffic signals
at Bridge Street and McCormick Boulevard.
For a practical application of math to bridges, click here to learn how to calculate the new bridge's rainwater runoff in the direction of the
Ecology Center parking lot.
Thank you to our bridge consultants, Alfred Benesh, and Sub-Consultant Engineer and Evanston resident, Carl Bova.
Upgrades proposed for Northwestern University's Athletics
Campus
Ryan Field:
Ryan Field is slated to receive a new primary scoreboard with a larger LED video screen and a replacement "ribbon" board in the south end zone, as well as behind the north end zone. These improvements inside the football stadium should be completed before the 2014 home season opener on August 20 against the University of California. These specialized scoreboards are intended for use only when the stadium facility is occupied by thousands of people. There will also be concrete repair work and painting on the east exterior facade of Ryan Field over the next several weeks.
Rocky Miller Park:
A significant donation has jump-started fundraising efforts for upgrades and renovations to the Wildcats'
baseball facility, Rocky Miller Park, located at Ashland Avenue and Isabella Street. The first ballpark improvements could happen
as early as Fall 2014 on the playing field itself, with installation of a new turf
playing surface.
Other improvements,
including new home and visitor locker rooms and training facilities, a new
press box and scoreboard, better seating, and possibly lights to enable
television coverage, are intended to bring the facility up to the standards of
a Big Ten baseball program. However, these renovations are dependent on reaching the project's fundraising goals. Rocky Miller Park was last renovated in 1983. Today, the best baseball facility in Evanston belongs to Evanston
Township High School, home of The Blue Monster.

Reminder: Leaf blowers
While our neighborhoods can get noisy for a lot
of reasons, it shouldn't be due to gas-powered leaf blowers. Operating these leaf blowers in City
limits is not permitted until October 1, and only during certain
hours.
Please help the City inform lawn services about our summer blower ban by calling 311, if you see a gas-powered blower in
use. Thank you.
Congratulations to Sectional Champions, ETHS Varsity
Baseball Team
The players and coaches of the Evanston Township High School baseball program took the team to the state's Class 4A Top Eight Tier this season before losing a close 7-6 game against South Elgin High School in the Supersectional. This is the farthest the ETHS baseball team has advanced in its post-season since before any player on this year's team was born. Congratulations, gentlemen.
Thank you
Compliments and thank you for your lovely gardens, including your gifts to all of us with improvements to our public parkways.
