About 150 people, most of them children, came to EPL to hear 2013 Newbery winner Katherine Applegate discuss her book, The One and Only Ivan, on July 3. The Newbery Medal is awarded for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Robin Sindelar, Library Assistant, said of the event, "Evanston is the most amazing community of readers and thinkers. The word spread through the community very quickly. Children missed camp to come meet Katherine Applegate. It was very inspiring to see the awe they felt as they connected this real author to a story they love."

The Evanston Public Library and the Youth Job Center, with generous funding from the Evanston Community Foundation, have joined together this summer to offer Compañeros, a new play literacy program in Spanish. Bilingual teenagers are employed through the Youth Job Center, and trained by EPL's Outreach Librarians to offer fun literacy activities for preschoolers in Spanish. The program is offered to Head Start and State Pre-K programs. Compañeros has some remaining sessions that are open to the community-at-large. Bring your preschooler for fun in Spanish: Wednesdays at 1:30, July 10 and July 17 at the Main Library.
