Mayfest (read: Dillo Day), June 1

And you thought Dillo Day was just for students.  Come to Northwestern University's lakefront for live music, food trucks, and special events for the annual Dillo Day beginning at 12:15 pm on Saturday, June 1.

Unless you're a Northwestern student, you'll need to register and obtain a wristband from the University's Office of Student Engagement to join the fun.  Guests under 19 years old must be registered and wear a wristband to enter the venue; Evanston residents over the age of 25 may register up to 4 guests under the age of 19 (and must remain with them at the venue).

Don't miss the Mayfest fireworks display at 10:15 pm, which you can view from Long Field (Sheridan and Lincoln) if you don't go to the lakefront.  For more information about Dillo Day, registration, musical line-up, and swag, go to www.dilloday.com.  And if community service is your thing, join the students for ReNUvation on Sunday beginning at 11:00 am to clean up the off-campus neighborhoods.

Thank you to the Evanston and Northwestern police departments, Office of Student Affairs, and the student organizers of Dillo Day for their comprehensive and collaborative planning for a safe event.

Local Artisans in Evanston: Galleria of Evanston

With many Evanston artists creating their work in their basements and garages, they also now have a storefront retail presence at the Galleria in Evanston at 1627 Sherman.  The Galleria features handmade and artisan-made products from over 40 local artisans and specialty retailers.

Golf in our midst

The golf season is in full swing in Evanston at the Evanston Wilmette Golf Course, our 18-hole (11 in Evanston, 7 in Wilmette), par 60 course with first tee at 1030 Central Street.  Hours are 6 am to dusk.  Golf 18 holes for as little as $14.  Call 847-475-9173 or email the course manager at evanstonwilmettecgc@gmail.com for information about leagues, outings, and to book your tee time.

Because borders don't define neighborhoods: Wilmette Updates

Wilmette elected a new Village President in April, Bob Bielinski.  Thank you to outgoing Village President, Christopher Canning, who served the Village of Wilmette for two terms and also served as president of the Northwest Municipal Conference, a regional government council.  I am grateful to Chris for our many cross-border conversations over the last four years and look forward to working with President Bielinski.

bahai

The Baha'i House of Worship is constructing a new Welcome Center on the southeast side of the temple at 100 Linden Avenue.  Construction should be completed by October 2013.  The Baha'i temple welcomes over 250,000 visitors a year.  United States headquarters for the Baha'i faith is located in Evanston's 7th Ward, at the Baha'i National Center, 1233 Central Street.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) is nearly finished with a major renovation project begun in late 2011 at Wilmette Harbor next to the Baha'i Temple on Sheridan Road.  The project includes replacing a 100-year old gate (where the lock used to be) at the north end of the North Shore Channel with three smaller gates which are used on the rare occasion to release stormwater into Lake Michigan during extraordinary precipitation events.  The MWRD is also rebuilding the century-old pump and adding a new pump to its pumping station under the Sheridan Road bridge.  The pumps are used to periodically refresh the water in the North Shore Channel with lake water.  The project is ahead of schedule and should be completed this September.

Public works project on Central Street, Parking Lot 4

City parking Lot 4 at Central and Stewart Streets will undergo significant reconfigurations and improvements this summer, including relocation of the lot entrance to Stewart Street, addition of sidewalk "bump-outs" at Central/Stewart, replacement of the sidewalks with permeable materials, installation of bike infrastructure, and completion of the I-Go electric car-charging, car-share station.  The project will enhance Central Street's green infrastructure and enhance pedestrian safety in a busy business district.  Thank you in advance for your patience with this project.  More information on the project is available here.

Northwestern University Athletics' Run for Walk, July 28

Register now for the 4.1 mile run or 5K family walk beginning and ending at Ryan Field in honor of late Head Football Coach Randy Walker.  The race starts at 7:00 am.   Last year's inaugural Run for Walk drew registrants from 17 states and almost 70 Illinois cities; Evanston produced the second highest number of participants.

Your race registration gets you a ticket to one of these Northwestern University non-conference football games:

Syracuse - September 7, 5:00 pm

Western Michigan - September 14, 8:00 pm

Maine - September 21, 2:30 pm (also Evanston Day at Ryan Field)

Early registration (before July 15) is $37.50; $40 on race day.  All proceeds go to C.A.R.E., Evanston's animal shelter.
