Happy Freedom Day!
Juneteeth is a celebration that takes place each year on the 19th of June, commemorating the liberation of enslaved African and Native Americans in the United States.
On June 19th, 1865, the Union Army ordered the freedom of all people still being enslaved in the state of Texas, the last Confederate state to practice institutionalized slavery. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1st, 1863, the remote location of Texas made enforcement of the Proclamation slower and inconsistent. Later in 1866, the last of the enslaved Choctaw were liberated, marking the end of enslavement in the US.
Today, Juneteenth is celebrated as a national holiday, but has been celebrated for centuries in Black communities and is considered the longest-running African-American holiday. Also called "America's Second Independence Day," Juneteenth stands as an important marker of American history, and an annual reminder of hope and progress to come.
Keep an eye out for upcoming Juneteenth events at the Library and the City of Evanston Parade!
Film It! is open to all D65 students and Evanston residents entering grades 5th – 8th in the Fall 2022.
The rules are simple – create a short movie (we recommend using iMovie) that is 30-90 seconds long and includes the five core filmmaking elements.
Make it something fun, interesting, about you, or whatever! Interview your grandparent, make a stop-motion video with objects, create a tik-tok style dance, or a how-to tutorial on something you want to show others. It’s up to you! Get started and register at our website. Grades 5-8.
In partnership with D65, EvanSTEM, Y.O.U., Family Focus, and Northwestern University.
