Summer Giving Campaign 2022
We're expanding our most valued summer opportunities, and we must raise $50,000 to support EPL's mission of engaging our community members wherever they are.
Summer learning loss, often referred to as the “summer slide,” can lead to a devastating loss of academic achievement. Students who don’t read during the summer lose an average of two to three months of reading skills.
Summer learning loss broadens achievement gaps, worsening inequity in our community.
During the summer months, the Evanston Public Library offers pathways to learning for Evanston youth throughout the community, no matter where they are. Our librarians set up shop in parks, summer camps, and beaches June to September. They sign kids up for our annual summer reading program. They give out free books and STEM activity kits. They issue library cards. They read aloud to the littlest story time fans and hold pride parties and library takeovers with our teens. (Find a whole rundown of activities here.)
Brighter paths begin at the Library
This year's summer reading program theme is "Read Beyond the Beaten Path," and young people across Evanston will be reading and participating in events to introduce them to all the opportunities the Library offers for a lifetime of learning and enrichment.
All summer long, we'll be inviting the members of our community to join us in forging paths for Evanston's young readers. Our goal is to raise $50,000 that enables the Library to provide these critical opportunities, including free books and STEM activities, park-based events, and connections to all the Library's resources. Reading just five books over the summer can prevent summer learning loss. A gift of $100 can make those books possible.
Will you consider donating now to support our summer engagement and reading efforts, to put more books and activities in the hands of Evanston's youth?
We cannot engage young readers without your help.
Despite the many diverse needs in our community, EPL is funded at about half the per capita rate as our neighbors:
That means we cannot provide these critical summer learning and literacy services without your support. More than 10% of our operational budget comes from non-tax revenue. Every year, hundreds of Evanston residents, EPL partners, and other generous supporters go above and beyond in their giving to continue to expand these programs. Please join us and make a gift that will benefit the Evanston community for generations.
Together, we are the Library.
Can't make a gift right now? You can also partner in our mission by volunteering your time, sharing a post on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, or even stopping by one of our two locations.
For almost 150 years, the Library has provided educational, culturally-rich resources for all residents, helped children prepare for school through the joys of reading and learning, celebrated Evanston’s diversity, and helped residents find information they seek. The Library is more than a building of books; it is a place to meet, connect, learn and explore. To learn more, visit www.epl.org.
