Today, January 17, is Tu B'Shevat, the minor Jewish holiday when the earliest-blooming trees in Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It is a New Year's Day or Birthday for trees!
Recently, Tu B’Shevat has developed into an ecological holiday that reminds us of our connection to the earth and to our role as caretakers of the environment. Some modern ways to celebrate include donating money to plant trees in Israel or planting trees locally. If you want to donate locally, check out Citizen's Greener Evanston Fund for Trees, which is administered by the Evanston Community Foundation.
Some folks mark the holiday by eating fruit, particularly fruits that grow on trees in Israel: figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. Introduce your kids to dates by trying these Chocolate and Date Snack Bites! And buying, peeling and eating a whole pomegranate is a wonder and a natural party!

Now we want to share back with you what we learned from you. Come listen virtually. Thursday, January 20, 6 pm: Register (and more information). Did we hear you right?
