1. Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery by Deborah Willis (print) In this pioneering book...the authors vividly display the seismic impact of emancipation on African Americans born before and after the Proclamation.
2. High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America by Jessica B. Harris (print) From chitlins and ham hocks to fried chicken and vegan soul, Harris celebrates the delicious and restorative foods of the African American experience and details how each came to form such an important part of African American culture, history, and identity.
3. Well-read Black Girl: Finding our stories, discovering ourselves edited by Glory Edim (print, ebook) An inspiring collection of essays by Black women writers on the importance of recognizing ourselves in literature.

We're all invited to celebrate Juneteenth in Evanston this year! The schedule of events include a parade that starts at 11 am on Saturday, June 19 at the Robert Crown Community Center parking lot, a 1 pm kick-off event at the Civic Center, and a 2:30 pm celebration at Twiggs Park. Evanston Public Library will be at Twiggs Park and we hope you come too! Learn more about this year's celebration here.
This holiday began in 1865 in Galveston, Texas, when General Granger of the Union Army read General Order No. 3, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was supposed to end slavery in the whole country.
The application for Evanston Public Library's Racial Equity Task Force (RETF) is open for recruitment of new members. The RETF helps guide equity, diversity and inclusion efforts at the Library. Comprised of community members, Library staff, and Library trustees, this task force is devoted to increasing our outreach and service to underserved residents, particularly those living in Evanston’s 5th, 8th, and 9th wards. Gather in the Garden: On Thursday mornings, come visit the Robert Crown Reading Garden and enjoy some fun outdoor activities for the whole family. Because of the presence of unvaccinated children, masks on all persons 2 & up are required, even at this outdoor venue. Registration is not required, but you can let us know you're coming here.

African and Latin Drumming for 9-12 Grade: Learn how to create and become a part of the rhythm in this percussion workshop. We will follow all necessary safety protocols: mask-wearing, social distancing, etc., and we'll provide an instrument to play. You may bring your own if you have one, though. Friday, June 11, 1 pm. EPL On the Fly!: Meet us in the park this month! Register for our 30-Day Summer Reading Challenge, pick up a free book and a STEAM or Craft Kit (depending on the week) to do in the park (social distancing required) or at home.

Make Your Own Bug Spray: Stop by the Robert Crown Branch Library and make your own insect repellent spray out of essential oils and other natural ingredients. Take home a little manual on how to make your own remedies, cleaning products and more. Friday, June 11, 1 pm and Monday, June 14, 3 pm.

Garden of Kindness: Please help us grow our garden! From June 11 to the end of July, come by, take a cutout flower petal, and write words of kindness or encouragement on it at the Robert Crown Branch Library. Then, add it to our garden!

DIY Comic Book Kit: Is your kid a fan of Dog Man? How about Smile or New Kid? Starting June 13, come to the Robert Crown Branch Library and pick up a comic book template for kids to create their own comic book!

Color Scavenger Hunt: Take a walk around the neighborhood with your child and have them write down or draw all the different things that match the colors on our pre-printed guide. See if you can find something in every color! The scavenger hunt guide will be available at the Robert Crown Branch Library starting July 9.

In-House Sewing Machine Loan: Come to the Robert Crown Branch Library—our sewing machines are waiting for you. Bring your project and any color spool you need and start creating. Sewing helps reduce our carbon footprint by limiting the amount of textiles and garments we purchase. Two hours allotted per patron per day/Only 2 people per machine. Learn more and register.

Beside saving money, the Repair Cafe has multiple benefits, from keeping stuff out of landfills, to promoting collaboration, skill-sharing and community self-reliance. Evanston Public Library, in partnership with Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre and ASE, the Chicago affiliate of the National Association of Black Storytellers, is presenting a workshop series on the art of storytelling. Young adults ages 16-19 and elders age 65 and over will partner together to listen and share stories across generations and cultures. The series will offer an opportunity to heal, share, and close the divide across cultures.
Beginning the week of July 12, the series will run through the week of August 16. Learn more and complete this survey by Thursday, July 1 to help us gauge community interest.
