Celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, with your family by reading together! Check out our new Earth Day Booklist.
In honor of April being Earth Month, the City of Evanston created some activities for your family, including the kid-friendly Quest4Earth's EcoWarrior of the Month.

Resources Matter: Ways to Prevent Waste and Recycle Right! In this lively discussion, Mary Allen, Recycling and Education Director at SWANCC, will share creative and practical ways to reduce and manage our waste. Co-sponsored with Citizens' Greener Evanston. For adults, teens, and interested upper elementary kids. Thursday, April 22, 12 pm: Register.

Beginning Birdwatching for Everyone! Chicago birdwatcher and photographer Scott Judd can help you find and identify birds right here in Evanston. In a fun and easy-to-understand style, Scott will address questions like: Do I need binoculars? Where should I look? How will I know what I’m looking at? Can I identify a bird based on its song? All ages, including kids! Thursday, April 29, 7 pm: Register.
District 65 created these Earth Week videos (in Spanish and in English). There are versions for two different age groups: kids in Pre K-2nd and grades 3-8. These videos can help kids learn more about the earth and actions we can take to help it.
Have thought about the Earth as art before? NASA did! Check out this cool ebook with stunning photos of our planet. They also have one about the Earth at night.
Want to create your own edible Earth model? We have a recipe for a planet that allows you to explore the different parts of the Earth using food items. There’s even a recipe for the Moon to orbit your Earth! Watch these videos to learn about the different parts of our Earth or the Moon. Moon activities also tie into Ramadan, which takes place during the lunar month.
You can take a tour of Earth, the Moon and even Mars using Google Earth! Download the free Pro version to your computer to access the Moon and Mars, or just explore Earth using your browser or mobile device.
We always talk about recycling as a way to help Earth, but did you know the Earth recycles too? You can make your own Winogradsky column at home to see how that happens.
Learn to measure the direction the wind is blowing with this wind streamer activity using this template. Or make this Cloud Teller to help you identify the different types of clouds you see in the sky.

Little Explorers: Sea Life! Learn about the ocean, identify some seashells, and make your own crab from a real shell! This class is a fun way for younger children to explore STEAM! The program includes a kit that your child can use during the Zoom program. (Please make sure your street address is correct when registering so we can deliver the kit to your home.) Microwave Cooking Class: Gluten Free: Calling kids in grades 1-5 who want to learn how to cook using their microwave! We'll try out a few gluten free recipes live! Ingredient lists will be sent out ahead of time in case you'd like to cook along with Ms. Laura, and all recipes will be emailed after the program. Saturday, April 24, 11 am: Register.

Graphic Novel Book Club for Kids: Diary of a Nerd: You love graphic novels, now come talk about them. We'll be discussing Philip Osbourne's humorous graphic novel, Diary of a Nerd (Vol. 1). Family Storytime and Craft: Turtles: Join us for stories, songs and a fun craft. Active Ideas for Your Toddler: Outdoors is the best place to practice gross motor skills, but for rainy or chilly days, these are great ideas for making balance and movement fun for little ones!
Evanston's YWCA invites us all to plan our own events to connect with the theme "Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis" April 22-25. Read aloud a few of the books on our young kids anti-racism list and then make a sign together for your window saying "Stand Against Racism" or something else you want to share about reducing the burden of racism on Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.
Dedicated to The Dream: Working towards Awareness & Celebration: The Evanston Public Library is piloting a program designed for curious families to listen, learn, and grow through thoughtful, kid-friendly, challenging-yet-tender experiences and conversations around race and culture. If this interests you and you have a child in grades 1-4, please fill out our Family Interest Survey. Filling out the survey doesn't register you for this program; we are gauging interest as we prepare for a late spring 2021 launch.
You may have heard of poet Amanda Gorman for the first time when she read her poem "The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country" at President Biden's inauguration. In this video she explains to kids why poetry is her medium and how poetry often underscores social movements.
She also has a list of tips for your kids about writing their own poetry. She advises aspiring poets to read, re-read, then finally write and make poetry of their own, defying social or cultural expectations for what poetry should look like.
Parents After Bedtime Read Aloud Book Club: Verse Novels! Three librarians will read three beautiful stories on three different nights, including Nikki Grime's book, pictured above. Parents get to relax and enjoy. Tuesday, April 13, 8 pm: Register.
Ramadan Mubarak (Blessed Ramadan) to all our Muslim neighbors and friends! Ramadan is a time of fasting and prayer during the day and wonderful gatherings with friends and family (iftar) to break the fast once the sun goes down. We've created a Ramadan booklist so you can help your kids learn more.
