To celebrate Poetry month, check out some great poetry books to read with your kids; start by reading one poem a night at dinnertime or bedtime. Check out our brand new Booklist of Poetry Books for Kids! Or come browse the books with Call Number x811 (poetry) in our two libraries.
Poetry is having a "moment" right now, partly due to Amanda Gorman's amazing performance at the inauguration. Many kids have found that writing poetry helps process and share our feelings about the pandemic. Get inspired by this kid-friendly and fun Evanston Public Library poetry video, sharing how to write an I am poem!

Celebrate libraries by making your own books! Here's a tricky little "book" project for tweens and teens. Or go simple for the youngest kids:
- Fold 3 sheets of 11×18 inch paper in half and staple.
- Make a poster board cover that is 8×24 inches. Fold it over, insert 8×12 inch sheets of white construction paper inside, and staple.
- Recycle manila file folders for book covers. Trim the folders to fit the size of the paper you use.
Does money grow on trees? Help your kids get Money Smart with this list of books for kids, tweens, and adults!
Play this money tree game with your preschooler. Trees really can teach us about coin names and basic math! You don't need play money or a color printer; just follow the basic directions with real coins and a picture you've drawn.
A teacher shares activities for teaching 1st-2nd graders how to count coins. It starts with skip counting: 5, 10, 15, 20!
Turn your excess LEGO blocks into this great building activity with a bank attached for K-3rd.
Dedicated to The Dream: Working toward Awareness & Celebration Do you want to support your child's healthy and positive racial identity development? Hoping to raise kids who recognize and fight racial bias and racism? Wish your family could talk together about these difficult but important and nuanced topics?
The Evanston Public Library is piloting a program designed for curious families to listen, learn and grow through thoughtful, kid-friendly, challenging-yet-tender experiences and conversations around race and culture. If you have a child in 1st through 4th grade, please fill out our Family Interest Survey. Filling out the survey doesn't register you for this program; we are gauging interest as we prepare for a late Spring 2021 launch.
LENA Start Information Sessions. LENA Start, an evidence-based community program, helps Evanston parents and caregivers by increasing conversation with their children during their most formative years.
