 EVANSTON, IL - Evanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty today issued the following statement regarding yesterday's shootings in Chicago and Evanston:
"Every day, police officers risk putting themselves in harm’s way when they put on the uniform. Yesterday was undoubtedly one of those days.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, January 9, Evanston Police officers responding to calls of a disturbance at Howard Street and Asbury Avenue found themselves at odds with a gunman whose violent rampage began earlier that day in Chicago.
Thanks to their quick response and heroic actions, Evanston Police officers shot and killed the gunman and brought the bloodshed to an end in a busy commercial area before anyone else could be hurt or killed. The offender’s weapon was recovered at the scene.
While we are still learning more about the offender, his motive, and the totality of yesterday’s tragic events, one thing is clear: If not for the brave actions of Evanston and Chicago police, many more innocent lives would have been lost.
My heart goes out to the victims of this senseless violence and their families. No words can repair the lasting damage done by this individual.
On behalf of the City of Evanston, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to the Evanston and Chicago police officers who put their lives on the line yesterday — and every day — to save others."
