Levy Lecture 'Chicago's Sweet Candy History' October 9

Leslie Goddard will speak about Chicago’s candy history based on her 2012 book, "Chicago's Sweet Candy History," on Tues., Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. in the Linden Room. Take a candy quiz, learn some of the history behind Chicago treat makers, explore what made Chicago such a powerful location, and why immigrants played a critical role in confectionery history. There is no cost, but reservations are required by calling 847-448-8250, stopping by the front desk, or clicking the button below. The Levy Lecture Series is sponsored by the Levy Senior Center Foundation.

Plan Ahead: Navigating Choices for End-of-Life Care October 11

Loretta Downs, founder of Chrysalis End-of-Life Inspirations, will provide information on palliative and hospice care, advance directives, end-of-life options for care, and guidance in how to voice your preferences with your loved ones and caregivers in a free presentation hosted by the Commission on Aging. Ms. Downs is an internationally recognized inspirational speaker, writer, and consultant on the subject of supporting the end of life with comfort and dignity. Registration is not required. This event will take place on Thurs., Oct. 11, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Levy Center.

Free Foot Screenings October 11

On Thurs., Oct. 11, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Dr. Timothy Kruse will offer free 10-minute foot exams and evaluations! Dr. Kruse will answer questions about foot hygiene and the control of fungus in both the skin and the toenails, discuss proper toenail cutting and callous maintenance, perform diabetic foot exams for potential skin breakdown and ulceration, and assess the circulation and neuro-status of your feet. The Illinois State Treasurer is holding $2.9 billion in unclaimed funds for Illinoisans ranging from lost paychecks to uncashed life insurance policies. The State holds these lost funds until they are claimed by either the original owner or their heirs.

On Mon., Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., representatives from the Treasurer's office will visit the Levy Center and will conduct a search for you at no cost. If money is owed to you and you provide proper identification, state staff members will assist you in filing the proper paperwork to receive your money.  Please call 847-448-8250 to make an appointment. Walk-ins are accepted, but registration is encouraged.


Halloween Paint and Sip Night October 25

On Thurs., Oct. 25, bring your imagination, friends and paint clothes to the Levy Center and leave with a unique piece of art painted by you! From 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., relax while sipping a glass of wine (or two) as art instructor Val McCune guides you in painting your masterpiece. We will be painting a picture with a fall/Halloween theme. No painting experience is necessary. Space is limited; register early. The cost of this program is $39 for Levy members and $54 for nonmembers.

Knit, String and Craft On Thursdays

Do you like to knit, stitch or crochet? Have you explored tatting or Tunisian crochet? Self-taught instructor Phyllis Weiland will guide you through your projects and teach you about holding needles, yarn, purl stitches, cast on and cast off stitches, and much more. This social group meets weekly on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Levy Library. Please bring your project to share with the group. New and beginner knitters are welcome. The first session meets on October 11, 18 and 25 and is $9 for Levy members. Drop-ins are also welcome for a fee of $3 for Levy members and $4 for nonmembers per class.
