Earth and Space Week with NASA @MyLibrary. Join us as we explore planet Earth and our Solar System though activities, films, crafts and discussions. We’ll start with a special showing of NOVA’s new film Decoding the Weather Machine with a discussion lead by partner Citizens Greener Evanston. Fleetwood-Jourdain Pop-Up Theater. Come to the EPL lobby/children’s area to hear a very short play! The award winning Fleetwood Jourdain Theater helmed by Evanston’s own Tim Rhoze will bring great theater to share. Saturday, August 18, 10 am – 10:15 am Lobby/Children’s Room, Main Library

Engaging Storytelling

Storytelling

In Our Own Voice. Two people with mental illness share compelling, personal stories that shed light on what mental illness is and the prejudices that often come with it. Wednesday, August 8, 7 pm, Community Meeting Room, Main Library. 

Every Object Has a Tale to Tell. Treasured objects are often passed down to remind us of memories, traditions and culture. Bring a family keepsake, or a printed photo.Join master storyteller Susan Stone and facilitator Amanda Friedeman, and create a work of art. Recommended for kids ages 5-15 and their favorite adults. Sunday, August 12, 1:30 – 3:00 pm, Illinois Holocaust Museum. Register with promo code library for free admission.

Summer Reading

Camp or vacations may be over but summer activities at EPL are still in full swing for kids! 

For children in preschool through 2nd grade, check out these programs: Power Hour Crafts on 8/8; Graphic Novel Book Club on 8/22 or 8/25; and the Upper El on 8/11.

For children in grades 3 to 5, check out these programs: Bilingual Storytime and Craft on 8/11;  Saturday Funday Family Spongebob Movie and Jellyfish Craft on 8/18; Jammie Time on 8/16; and Read with Me on 8/14 and 8/21.

Summer Reading

The Summer Reading Program ends August 19. Complete the  reading log and collect the grand prize. This year more than 4000 readers joined the program! Summer Reading makes a positive impact on learning. We thank our partners: City of Evanston, Evanston/Skokie School District 65, the McGaw YMCA, Y.O.U, Ridgeville Park District, and Family Focus for embedding reading as part of their camps and programs.

There's lots for teens to do at the Teen Loft or our EPL branches. View all August programs for teens including the Social Justice Book Club, a Mario Kart tournament, a Comics Workshop, Family Trivia, Hacking Electronics, and cool crafts.

Capture Summer. Creations of Y.O.U. students will be displayed August 9-30 on our second floor landing. Capture Summer is a collaboration between KIDS Global Network, Inc. and Y.O.U. using PhotoVoice, a technique for storytelling through photography.
