Department Spotlight: Health and Human Services

To help employees know more about City operations, this newsletter will focus on individual departments or divisions and the services they provide.

Law

The Health and Human Services Department provides services to residents, with a specific emphasis on at-risk populations. The Department is active in supporting the overall health and well-being of residents through its food, environmental, property maintenance, emergency preparedness and communicable disease monitoring activities, as well as General Assistance and Emergency Assistance programs.

The Department is responsible for operating programs that prevent infectious and chronic diseases, promote food safety, and assure quality health care and healthy living. They also play a significant role in making sure that the City is prepared to respond to emergencies, such as natural disasters, emerging disease threats and bioterrorism. The Department does all of this by maintaining close partnerships with local community stakeholders such as hospitals, businesses, elected officials, and school districts. Above all, the Department is focused on eliminating the disparities in health between different racial and cultural groups, giving families a healthy start in life, and adopting health reforms that focus on prevention and primary care.

Please join the City in thanking Director Evonda Thomas-Smith and the members of the Health and Human Services Department staff for all that they do to support not only those most in need, but all community members.

Winter Safety

winter safety

Workers who are exposed to extreme cold or work in cold environments may be at risk of cold stress. Extremely cold or wet weather is a dangerous situation that can cause occupational illness and injuries such as hypothermia, frostbite, trench foot, and chilblains. Remember to take the proper precautions when working outdoors this winter.
