 The City of Evanston announces closures and refuse collection schedules for the Independence Day holiday weekend, Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5.
Facilities The Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center will be closed July 3-5. All Evanston Public Library locations will be closed on July 3 and 4. The Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center will be closed on July 3, open on July 4 from 9 a.m. to noon, and open on July 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Robert Crown Center will be closed July 3 and 4. The Levy Senior Center will be closed on July 3 and 4, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 5. The Noyes Cultural Arts Center will be closed July 3 and 4, and open on July 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Chandler-Newberger Center and the Ecology Center will be closed July 3-5.

 The most recent Outstanding Employee Award was presented to Commander Melvin Collier, Sergeant David Berman, Sergeant Jason Garner, Detective Anthony Beckman, Officer Heidi Bernhardt, Officer Pedro Carrasco, Detective Kenneth Carter, Officer Jarrod Deitrich, Detective Marla Dukler, Officer Nina Griffith, Detective Corey McCray, Detective Daniel Mokos, Officer Dalton Servatius, and Officer Amin Virani.
On Sunday, May 24, Detective Kenneth Carter, currently assigned to the Neighborhood Enforcement Team, while off-duty observed a male subject standing on the ledge on the top floor of the public parking garage in the 1800 block of Maple Avenue. Detective Carter notified emergency dispatch and then proceeded to the top floor with responding officers where the subject was located. The subject on the ledge was extremely distressed and stated that he wished to harm himself by jumping off the garage. As the officers spoke with the individual, it became apparent that he intended to take his own life. Without being noticed, Detective Carter was able to crawl along the wall behind the subject and grab hold of him until he and assisting units were able to pull the subject to safety.
