A Message from our Deputy Administrator Veterinarian Why Grooming is Essential

At DuPage County Animal Services, we see it all too often: small-breed, fluffy lap dogs and the always popular doodle breeds with coats so severely matted they require full shave downs under anesthesia. These mats aren't just unsightly; they’re incredibly painful and can cause skin infections, bruising, and even tissue damage if they become tight enough to reduce circulation to the limbs, the ears, or other parts of the body. If left long enough, limbs and tails may need amputation due to irreversible damage.

Small breed dogs are always in high demand due to their size, cuteness, and the ease of finding pet-friendly housing. Doodles have become the popular family dog for their fun personalities. Similarly, longhaired cats are adored for their luxurious coats. But what many pet owners don’t realize is that the very traits that make these animals so appealing also come with a major responsibility: regular grooming.

Daily brushing, scheduled professional grooming, and routine coat checks are essential, not optional, for breeds with high-maintenance coats. Neglecting this care can lead to serious medical issues and an expensive trip to the vet – a trip that could have been prevented via regular grooming.

At DCAS, we pride ourselves on making pets feel better with the “DCAS Special” haircut we often have to include with spays and neuters. The dogs and cats feel immensely better when their hair is no longer matted. But ideally, these pets shouldn’t have to face the pain or discomfort in the first place. Before bringing home a “fluffy” small breed, a doodle, or a longhaired cat, consider not just the cuteness but the commitment. Grooming isn't just about looks—it’s a critical part of your pet’s health and happiness.

For many long-haired pets, grooming will be part of your daily routine. Introduce grooming tools with treats and use positive reinforcement to help these sessions go smoothly, especially at first. The ASPCA has more tips for grooming at home for all kinds of pets.
