  What Would They Say?
You might hear a familiar phrase, one heard by countless parents this summer – “I’m Bored!” Cats communicate with their actions. In fact, many behaviors we find irritating, such as knocking items to the ground, are often their way of curing boredom. Just as our kids can fill the long summer hours with mischievous activities, cats will find ways to stay entertained. We can prevent some of these destructive tendencies by providing enrichment. Enrichment is simply a way for cats to show off natural abilities in ways that won’t drive us crazy.
While the outdoors can be a very enriching experience, unsupervised roaming is very dangerous. Cats let outside can get lost, hurt by other animals, contract diseases, and even be killed. The better option is to provide your cat safe access to the outdoors through a catio, walks on a leash, or window access. With 4th of July around the corner, it’s an especially dangerous time for pets to be outside. Keep cats indoors where they’ll be safe.
With a little creativity, we can provide indoor enrichment to satisfy our cat’s every need. There are many websites providing DIY enrichment for our feline friends. Try them out to find your cat’s next favorite hobby!
Like us, not all cats will like the same things. By trying a variety of toys, games, and activities, you’ll not only cure your cat’s boredom, but you’ll also strengthen your relationship.
