A Better World through Kindness to Animals
Not only is that the vision of Best Friends Society but it’s a goal we strive for at DuPage County Animal Services. This week is Be Kind to Animals Week. The definition of kindness is surprisingly simple and even doable – the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. With the new facility, we’re excited to have more opportunities for visitors, and especially children, to learn of the plight of homeless animals. If people are not aware of the problems, they cannot and will not become part of the solution. Through outreach, education, and more chances for the public to interact with shelter animals, we hope more residents will further develop their empathy towards animals within our community.
What is empathy? Empathy is a “stimulated emotional state that relies on the ability to perceive, understand, and care about the experiences or perspectives of another person or animal.” When people feel empathy, they are motivated to make a change for the better. Our goal is to make the lives of both the animals and their adopters better and, hopefully in turn, the world a little nicer.
How can we create a kinder world? As with many problems, it starts at home and radiates out into the community. By advocating for kindness for our pets, we teach through example. Understanding how our pets feel and responding accordingly is a wonderful way to teach others, especially kids, the importance of respect for others. We’ve provided some easy tips you can use at home to better understand your pets and deepen the bond between all residents of the house – the two-legged and the four-legged.

Figuring out what our pets are feeling and thinking can require some detective work. Looking for context clues and decoding body language can be key to fostering positive relationships with our pets.
Fear Free is a wonderful organization devoted to helping pet owners. Check out their helpful videos for Feline Body Language and Canine Body Language.

Think of the most annoying people you know. Imagine you are trapped in a room with them 24/7. Now imagine, after two weeks, your boss comes to give you an evaluation. Would you do well?
That's similar to what happened to Queenie. Stuck in a room surrounded by other cats, Queenie came off as a total Brat. The opposite of Miss Congeniality, this poor girl could only show off her worst sides. Luckily, a staff member wanted to see how she'd do in a different situation. Queenie got out of the shelter and onto the throne of her one-cat Queendom - exactly what she wanted.
Now we're seeing the TRUE Queenie, an independent cat who is fiercely loyal to her people. Given the chance to adjust to a new home, Queenie is sure to win over all the subjects of her domain - as long as they all walk on two-legs that is!
Are you looking for a cat with enough personality you'll never need another feline friend? Let Queenie come into your home and your heart and reign supreme! Click her picture to fill out an application.
