A message from our Veterinarian AdministratorStay Dry - Be Prepared! Cat with umbrella

April still brings showers (and May flowers) but now, with the rise in the global average temperature, extreme weather patterns seem to be year-round. When those April showers feel more like monsoons, it’s a great reminder to gather emergency supplies for both you and your pets. To stay dry in the rain, you need to know where the umbrella is. The same goes for emergencies! The Ready.gov website provides useful information on Building an Emergency Kit and includes additional links to help pets and seniors.

One important reason DuPage County Animal Services is building a 10,000 square foot addition is to be better prepared to handle animal-related emergencies that occur in our county. When natural disasters affect our community, we will be here ready to provide life-saving care for pets and families in need!

Welcoming New Faces!

Colleen with African Goose

Colleen C. rejoins the DCAS Care Staff as an Animal Caretaker I. Colleen started her relationship with DCAS in 2002 when she adopted a cat from the shelter. Shortly after that, she began volunteering with cats and dogs. As an employee for almost a decade, Colleen saw the rabbit program at DCAS grow exponentially as she used her own knowledge as a rabbit owner to advocate for the small animals at the shelter. She is excited to be back at DCAS during this incredible time as the new shelter expansion includes a dedicated room to small animals. While Colleen continued to volunteer as a rabbit caregiver during her hiatus, she gained new skills working for DCAS’ exotic veterinarian Dr. Brown. Colleen cared for a wide variety of animals: chickens, llamas, alpacas, and goats to name a few. Hopefully we won’t need her shearing and hoof trimming skills at DCAS, but it’s nice to know we can call on Colleen! At home she can be found chilling with her pet rabbit, DCAS alum Fritz.

Tamatha K with dog

Tamatha K joins the DCAS Front Office as a Senior Account Clerk. Tamatha comes with a strong background in bookkeeping and accounting, most recently as a community space manager with Regus. Originally from Lemont, Tamatha grew up on a farm surrounded by dogs, horses, and other animals. After 20 years in the city, Tamatha is eager to come back to a quieter region where she can hike and spend time on her bike or her motorcycle. Tamatha has three dogs at home, a pittie named Storm, and two coonhounds named Nate and Holly (a DCAS alum). Prior to joining our team, Tamatha helped with several fundraising efforts for the shelter and wants to learn the behind-the-scenes information. She’s excited for this opportunity to give back and be part of the work DCAS does for its community.

What's That I Hear???

Eve, an adoptable bulldog mix wearing rabbit ears

Is it the sound of an adopter filling out an application for the lovable Eve??? Eve has been at DCAS for almost four months, waiting for that special family to come forward. She loves to cuddle with her people but is fine hanging out in a crate if she needs to. Perfectly house-trained, Eve is very food motivated and easy to train.

Her foster family is taking a vacation and Eve will need to come back to the shelter at the end of the week. We're hoping to find her another family before that happens. Help spread the word on this delightful bully mix! Click her picture to fill out an application today!
